^^^Excellent summary Rob and still sporting the TDi badge I see. For someone to favour the RS6 over the RS4 having owned both is high praise indeed!

With you on the traffic-light grand-prix bit. I have yet to be beaten of the lights, bikes included. In fact, the only bikes that have beaten me off the lights are the ones that have wormed their way imbetween the cars, gotten to the front of the queue and then sat over the line just in front of me - if I squirt too hard, I'd wipe 'em out, so have to let them go!! Er, hang-on a minute, that sounds feckin gross! What I meant to say was, If I give too much juice - arghh, start again - if I bury too hard - ok, you know what I mean!

Ditto on the traffic lights, nothing has come close to keeping up.
Am I correct in thinking that there is no law in how quick you get to the speed limit?

I think the problem lies in that they sometimes just don't feel quick. They are very refined, but that's the point in the car - it feels safe and comfy but it flies when you need it to.

Completley agree . I`m 5 months in to ownership of a std avant and have to confess to feeling slightly underwhelmed with the experience when I first floored it to overtake a line of traffic on the drive home after buying ,it didn`t "feel quick" !! this illusion soon changed when I looked in the rear view mirror and was astounted at how much of a distance it had opened up between the following traffic and how hard I found myself braking to shed speed before I ran into the car in front (I still find it amazing everytime ,more so when it`s wet )
Apart from an increase in the lovely V8 rumble it felt so effortless . I would be suprised if there are many cars with the performance and practicality that could be truely used daily in & all weathers .
With every other car I`ve had come 5 months & I`m usually getting bored , the Autotrader is out & I`m begining to look around for the next one , not in the case of the RS can`t see myself ever getting bored !!

.......... that said saving for stage 1 & milltek

It's only got 5 gears to get you to 200mph. And the engine red-lines at 6500rpm. THis means that the gears are very long resulting in the deceptive acceleration.

The opposite is something like an S2000 which you rev to 10000rpm and think you're doing 100 when you're actually doing 23mph.

Moocher - I am hoping so. I am sure it is great but you can't beat the low down punch and torque.

Shoppinit - Spot on.

All - I still give those B5 RS4 jobs a wide berth as I know they can be a little quick also....

When you are bored of the std performance (and lets face it, at 450bhp it ain't slow compared to 99% of other cars out there), get a remap. That'll buy you another year whilst helping fuel consumption and altering the power curve to respond the way you want it too.

It would be worth mentioning that there are lots of little bits on these cars that can be dodgy and zap performance such as MAF's, DV's, vacuum hoses etc. But assuming a good health check from a reputable tuner (and there are only 4 or 5 that know their way around these cars properly) and you should start with a good baseline.

MRC reckon on about 600lb/ft. I suppose the BHP must be 570 odd or thereabouts. The car will do more but the gearbox starts slipping. I am can't therefore go any higher on boost etc and the we can;t take full advantage of the watermethanol so that really just keeps temps where they should be.

 I read with interest.

I didnt want to say anything before hand, but when I test drove it i found out very quickly that you have to drive it like a Manuel "Que?" IE lift off between shifts......... as said over the road somewhat defeats the object.

I thought it was really <beep> when compared to my 6, but then if you come from a 535 or something and you are used to that kind of IKEA TAT, then the M5 may be for you.

As for speed well, its no sluch, but, would you worry pitting you car against it- even in standard form? what you lose in power you gain in grip and confidence... and the kind of Geegees ours are squirting out, i have no worries at all.
