Is the RS6 really that quick?
hey guys, so i was thinking that RS6 are becoming affordable and are quick and practical. I have spent a few days on here researching and looking at some other sites also. Reading through here (although it is bound to be a little biased) you would be led to believe that an Rs6 can take out a fair few cars including amongst others (and i quote) 'TVR's lambos nobles' etc.... yet most of the videos and road tests i have seen say that RS6's only trap at like 105 in the 1/4 (slower than e46 m3) and seem to lose to alot of less powerful cars.
The most recent being this one when i looked at utube a tuned rs6 cannot even see off an e39 m5 which are a lot slower than nobles and the like (e39 m5 vs 550hp rs6). Looks like a legitimate vid to me??

coupled with astronomical running costs am i missing something here. Are RS6's overated, should i consider an rs4 instead?[/i]

RE: Is the RS6 really that quick?
Always consider an RS4, especially the B5 because I love them. however if you want spaceship performance and one of the ultimate ways of eating up thousands of miles then go RS6!
I recently had an altercation with a Noble M400 which started pulling away from me from 60 up to about 110 as far as I can remember. After that I started reeling him in.
With a small amount of dosh put towards tuning these cars will do over 200mph!! Try asking an E46 M3 to do that.
I am not biased at all and actually enjoy it when cars come along and toast me but it has only happened twice during my ownership once by a 997 turbo and the other by an SL65 AMG black series. The list of defeats is endless, includes many exitca and is very enjoyable to look back on.
The only downside really is the nibleness when it gets twisty but this is only to be expected with a 2 tonne car!

I am a new owner and have had my share of quick motors and I would say that the audi compares well. IMO it does not excell in any one area but offers a very good driving experience coupled with practicality and build quality.
The performance is strong but in standard trim torque is limited which does it no favours pulling two ton around. That said it does feel significantly faster than an e46 m3 or an e39 M5 but slower than my sl55 or evo 9 running 400/400.
The RS6 needs to be compared with bigger motors like the e39 M5 and w211 e55's. It perhaps unfair of me to say that the RS6 does not handle like an evo or have the straight line of some amg mercs as it is a very different car what it does for me is combine most of the good bits of these cars with few of the drawbacks and the ability to fit a fridgefreezer in the boot should the need arise and maintain its pace in the wet.
The other draw for me is the forced induction as extra performance is relatively cheap to achieve in comparrison with M cars or amg's.
I agree that standard the RS6 is not an absolute rocket ship but it is very capable does nothing badly I think the appeal of these cars runs deeper than raw statistics would suggest.

Totally agree with the above!!
I can compare the handling characteristics directly with the Evo as my last car was an Evo7 and in fact I had both insured for a few days.
Obviously the Evo is in a completely different league handling wise but the RS6 really did surprise me when I heavily leaned on the engineering!! It will attack the B roads with impressive returns!
Especially through the steering which upon first experience seems very benign and almost ponderous with a very thick lazy feedback but the more you get the car onto the grip limit the more it seems to wake up and start to communicate. Considering the weight and size it doesn`t fail to impress and puts a lot more nimble cars to shame.
A can only imagine what an RS4 is like at the limit!!!

i guess rs6's perhaps feel faster than they are due to the turbo's. I passengered in one about 2 years ago and it was quick but maybe wasnt running 100%. I have read alot of stories about huge running costs on here and i suppose i dont want to have huge expectations about the performance given the expense and then be dissapointed. I recall i guy on another forum quoting that he can see off his friends rs6+ with a mapped new s3 due to the weight of the rs6 which seems a little suprising, then i read on here that rs6s are as quick as nobles so just a bit confused...

Hmmm.
If you are concerned aboutr running costs... dont buy one.
Anyone want to chip in with my quote?
Why not buy a super 7 or an excige if you want nimbleness and speed? sure not the quicket cars around but you wil kill anything around a roundabout.
Sure noble's and evos are quick, but ours are as quick with a wardrobe in the back.....(not boasting just elling like it is)

It's all Bollox.
Half of what you read is bull and the other half is all <beep>.

I've driven both the SL55 and my RS6 round a track, the SL is even more of a barge and not as fast. Ok, that's not surprising given the weight difference and the tuning (and I've got 3 more seats!)
I could go out and buy a Vauxhaul Nova and modifiy it to be faster than my '6, but it would never be a '6. Besides you're not likely to fit a cooker in the back of a Ferrari or a Porsche.
My friend's BMW 3 series was stuck down the bottom of his road in the snow, I've never had that problem. I didn't buy the '6 because it was the fastest car, I bought it because it's the best at what it can do (and for what we needed it to do), especially for the price.
The RS4 is also a *great* car but rear space is limited in comparison, it depends on what you need it for.
As Mooch has said (and tested)... modified ones really *are* 200mph fast. Not in the same league as a Veyron or CCX, but how many of us could afford them or their running costs, a windscreen for a Jag XJ220 would set you back around £16,000 pounds.
Just my 2p.

ok im rambling now... as i said i am aware of the practicality etc of the rs6 im just talking speed terms like an e55 amg estate can carry a sofa has 476bhp yet is much quicker than a 500bhp rs6 estate in a straight line, How can this be? It doesnt make any sense to me. I dont want an e55 i prefer the rs6 im just looking for explanations

I watsed V10 m5s on the twisty and on the straights, dont bother now.
Ok mines not standard, but the V10 has 500 hp and weighs like about as much as the tirpitz, but my 6 weighs as much as the tirpitz and the bismark whilst being shagged doggy fashion by all of Barnes wallace's Tall boys and the all of the x craft together.
I have driven the V10, in fact nearly bought the touring. I posted it on here somewhere, that both the salesman and i prefered the RS6, the rs6 was faster in every way. The only reason I nearly bought it was i was going to be getting an 55 plate car for my 6 and 10k. But I couldnt do it. It sounded like a tractor when it started, the interior was vile and it very definately woud kill you on a greasy road with the TC off......
