thanks for the replies guys. in process of getting an exhaust and just thought that it might be easier to replace the cats with a pipe rather than gutting them.......

Does gutting the pre cats improve the sound? If not, what are the advantages? I am changing an 02 sensor on my D2 S8 tomorrow and may well do this? If someone could let me know that would be swell. Thanks.

the precats are restrictive hence removing them helps the exhaust flow better - not sure about the sound improving however, the exhaust note will become louder by default.

would wrapping part of the exhuast help? (retaining heat/better flow of gasses)
