TYRES CHOICES - SEAT MOUNTS

Post by lellaS4 » Fri Nov 21, 2003 9:37 am

Hi all,
Anyone running or run Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres on their cars???
Any problem with tramlining at speed as they wear down???

One other thing the floor mounts for the front seats in an S4 are they the same as a standard A4???
Thanks

Tyre of choice is Toyo Proxes T1-S.
Not quite as the Goodyear in the wet, far superior in the dry and can be got at under £100 per corner fitted in 17" size.

My 4 favorite ultra high performance tires are:

B.F. Goodrich g-Force T/A KDW2
Bridgestone S03
Falken GRB FK-451
Toyo T1-S

For high performance and ultra quiet and high tread wear:
Falken ST115

Best bang-for-the-buck are the Falken tires. I run them on my S4 and have been for a while.

You reckon Proxes are better than F1s in the dry?
I've run Toyos extensively in the past on various cars and have recently run a few sets of F1s and I rate the Toyos for the money, for sure, but Eagle F1s are better in every area IME. The wet grip of the Toyos is wonderful but they are really soft and squirm in the dry and wear like crazy. Conversely, I find the F1s last longer and have quite a bit better handling dynamics than the Proxes. In short, I find that the Toyos get their wet-weather grip from soft rubber which makes them wear fast as hell and compromises the dry handling.
Mind you, whenever I'm skint and need new shoes I always buy Proxes; I think they're brilliant and never have I driven a tyre with such a steady and readable breakaway!
Just thought I'd be cheeky and lob in a grenade on my first day here at rs246! ATB Richard

It's not quite that simple mate. They may give more grip but grip in itself has little to do with handling....
Indeed, good handling (and this is more manifest in the dry) is generally more to do with the stiffness of the sidewall but this in turn reduces the wet grip....everything's always a compromise, isn't it.

Had the older F1s they were quite good but wore within 8K

Then went to SO3s they were very expensive the first set came in at 160 each! The fecking local dealer knew I was stuck

I got him to quote for a sceond set complaining about his first price he came down to 125 each.

I told him I could get then cheaper else where and bought the price down to 120 each. Still they are expensive. But a pretty decent tyre with good wear and road noise IMHO.

Neither tramlined but I did notice a marked reduction in the rear suspension behaviour as both the wore to the legal limit. The back fo the car would skip over pot holes nothing to do with alingment or suspension.

The fecking P Zeros on my new RS are bloody awful for tram-lining and slipping.
