Cost of a S4 40k Service?
Cost of a S4 40k Service?
About how much will I be looking at for a main dealer 40k service for a S4?
Also, what gets done at the 40k service?

Re: Cost of a S4 40k Service?
Mine had the 40k service just before I bought it.
The 40k is a biggie, and includes spark plugs which are outrageously expensive (though they do last 40k). Mine also had new brake pads all round plus the usual filters, lubricants, plus a brake fluid service. Mine was also switched to AVS at that time.
Cost was about £850 all in. Not cheap, but quite a lot of work and invaluable for keeping the warranty up to date.

Re: Cost of a S4 40k Service?
Just on the point of Spark plugs. I was servicing my 1.8 Turbo and it takes 4 Bosch triple electrode plugs. From Audi they were 6.10 each . For the exact same plug from German and Swedish they were 1.70. WTF is that about?

Re: Cost of a S4 40k Service?
My 40k service was £ 450 with AVS oil (I use the oil but stay on 10k intervals).

Re: Cost of a S4 40k Service?
Altough my 40K service was about £800, there were a few extras including a RR run and 4-wheel alignment.
IIRC AmD quoted me about £200-250 + VAT for the basic 40K service.

Re: Cost of a S4 40k Service?
I believe the spark plugs in the S4 as fitted at my cars service came to about £90. The triple electrode plugs you are talking about are nothing special really - pretty run of the mill through the VW Audi range. (I'm not disin' your car, BTW )

Thats standard price for the triple electrode jobs.
fyi standard plugs for a VW VR6 engine are 6 quid a pop. The platinum jobs are 20 quid each !!!
Now that does hurt at VW prices when ecp do them for under half that.

Thanks all
Another probably dumb question..
When do I need my 40K mile serivce, when the oddometer is at 40k (it's on 39k now) or when my "next service" indicator tells me so (that's got around 3k to go) ?
Alex.

Alex,
1) are you on Variable Servicing ??
2) What does your service book say ??
Assuming you are on variable then I would go with the next service indicator. If you aren't using AVS then check when it was last serviced and work out the next due mileage (should be written in the book anyway).
It could be it has had an extra service which would disturb the nice even normal 10k/12month service interval timing.
Remember services are time based too, so it might have been done at say 18k, rather than 20k after its second year.
Only true record is the service book, or ask Audi to look up its history on their computer if you don't have the service book any more.
HTH.

John.

John,
Thanks for the reply

I've got the service book here, how do I tell if I'm on Variable Servicing or not? The last service was on 9/10/03 at 37.4k and I'm on 39k now.
In the service schedule every service box has "Next Service: Due when indicated in dash display panel" written in it.
...So I'm guessing that means I'm on AVS ( I'm also presuming that AVS = "Audi Variable Servicing" ), in which case I've got a few more miles before my "40k service"
Cheers,
Alex.

Re: Cost of a S4 40k Service?
I think my service book also has a tickbox for AVS services. Easiest thing would be to just phone a dealer and give them your reg though. That way you'd be absolutely certain...
Re: Cost of a S4 40k Service?
Correct, AVS does mean that.
If the book tells you to go by the DIS (drivers information system I believe) then you are almost certainly on AVS.
Since your service was such a short time ago you have plenty of time to go yet
I would check your service book though and see what extra items would normally be done at a 40k service that are not done at yearlys (brake fluid perhaps, or gearbox oil, or belts).
Then I'd call the garage and see if it is acceptible for these to wait until your next 'lubrication' service.
No harm in asking the question, eh.
Cheers,
John.

Re: Cost of a S4 40k Service?
IMO you should be a little sceptical about AVS for a performance car, especially a turbo one. Repairs can be expensive so preventive maintenance is a good idea. All my services have been done early and I will continue to do so. I also change my oil every 5000 miles or so.

Feck that's expensive. I had two 20K services carried out on my S4 and one 10K service. The 10K service was £120 and the 20K one £250. I don't know about 40K miles for plugs cos mine got changed out at 20K intervals. The basic 20K is as you say plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter, polen filter. A general check round the car. The extras are as noted depending on the age or milage you maybe due for brake fluid change. 1/2 to 1 hr job. £5 of VAG fluid.
From memory, I'm sure I got the front disks and pads and 2No £22 CV boots for just under £300 (parts only)
The rears pads were £65 and I think the rear disks were £70 a pair.
which would make approx £390 in brake parts. 390+250+5=£645.
850-645=£200 labour including VAT. Hhmm adds up assuming you got new disks? You just mention pads.
Aye they're no cheap. I did my own brakes, suspension, ball joints, CV boots, squeeks, rear wheel bearing, DV service, TBB check and boost pressure runs using VAGCOM simply maintained the the basic services 10K and 20K services if they noted anything I repaired it.
The first so called German specialist didn't replace all the plugs. The daft bandits only changed out 4 leaving the two harder ones in place for Jim at Star Performance to find. I've still to haul them up over that. Bandits
I did this not so much out of being mean but my local dealership never seemed to do anything right. They scratched car in two places so much so I had to have the wing resprayed! They left copper slip on the seat which took some determined cleaning. They wrapped insulating tape around the rear door pin to stop the rattle rather than re-adjust the the door pin! Argued that B5 S4's didn't come with a tinted reversing light despite one sat on their forecourt and my mates S4 having the same smoked lense. They charged me an arm and a leg in the process and rarely supplied a courtesy car. The also persistantly told me my car was running fine when it was 40bhp down! Then had the cheek to say my car was a problem car yet AMD fixed it in a couple of hours what they never did in 14+ vists and 8 months and offered my £8500 on a trade in against a 37K RS4 twats.
Feck I went to Manchester and bought a better RS4 and saved £4300 in the process
