SR-71's oil was found to have a flashpoint of just 100 degrees c when he had it professionally analysed after 5k use.

Out of interest what oil/spec do audi use for fixed servicing?
Err are you sure? My understanding of 'flash point' is that this is the critical temperature that when a flame (spark) is applied to the vapours of a substance it will momentarily flash. if this happens in a confined space it can and does lead to an explosion!! If so better keep my temps down!
Hmm so is 131 dagrees High
Nah just worthy of respect! secondary explosion may add another 100bhp!!! 8)

P_G,

Cognizant of my own experience I have asked Audi UK what oil I should use bearing in mind I have observed such high operating temps for the oil.

But no answer...yet.

Anecdotally, Audi have told me they agree that 125C is far too hot for a 5w-30 oil.

Yet again, the owner who wants to use his car as the RS4 publicity suggests (i.e., at a track) now has a connundrum on his hands: Use a 5w-30 oil which gets real hot but maintains his warranty, or something like Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 (although they now do a 5w-30 as well) which, may or may not get as hot, but will at least retain some of its viscosity at those temperatures, but will presumably, void his warranty?

I should have results on how the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 holds up under similar conditions in due course but I am reasonably confident that if US cars run 5w-40 under their warranty scheme, it isn't going to cause huge problems for Euro cars.

Again, there are demonstrable results that show RLI's 5w-40 reduces wear in this engine.

Simon at Opie Oils has yet to get back to me with results from their lab regards the RLI 5w-40 which I have provided them for analysis.

They will decide on that basis whether to stock the oil for owners here in the UK.

I know if my car was out of warranty I would not think twice about using that oil.

I also believe there are more developments afoot to improve things further.

The other solution is, I suppose, to over-size the oil cooler(s) slightly....I'm not sure whether that is easy or not?

Thanks SR71.

Given my car rarely runs anything over 110 even when pushing on I'll stick to Titan 5W-30 until results are around to say Silkolerne 5W-30 or 40 is better long term.

Been reading this with interest , oil is like tyres , dont skimp and buy the best . I didnt like putting in 5w30 in this engine , it runs too hot when pressing on (though dont think I have seen over 125 degrees yet)! a symptom of this is the amount of oil volatizing and evaporating then landing up coating much of the intake system .
So last service , nearly 6000 miles ago I had it filled with Motul 300v 5w40 - and guess what , my oil consumption has dropped from around a litre every 1500 miles to none !! still on the full mark , no top ups !! BUT I guess that means no fresh oil being added between changes.
I have now bought silkoline pro s 5w40 for a try as opie suggested that might be a better road oil .
Anyway , I have had no problems so far with 5w40 and will continue to use it because I reckon it suits this engine better
