I guess it depends on what the problem actually is. If its a dead battery, then I can see how the warranty could say it isn't covered. However, if its a dead battery that you can do nothing to change yourself (as it is a sealed unit), and you're getting a constant warning light on the dash as a result, I think you'd have some argument about it being a design fault that they should fix. Also, how would you know what the problem is without investigating it? Can they say for sure its a battery issue?
On this subject.......
I have a spare set of wheels and tyres which have the sensors in so what happens it I change them over does the car recognize the new units automatically or do they have to be set up in some way ?
Grizz checked the battery voltages on the set which are on the car (using vagcom I think) last time I was up at Unit 20 so I know this is possible, One was nearly dead and giving me warnings on the DIS and the rest were getting low so I'm waiting until they are all dead to see if I can get a claim out of it and have all four renewed at once.
Just thought I'd ask to save myself some time later. ............

Kwack, I'm (pretty) sure that when Grizz checked mine He told me which units batteries were dead so the stealers should be able to do it, unless they're just playing stupid in the hope You'll buy a full set !

Well, a quick update on my TPMS.
Car had been in to Edinburgh Audi previously and I was told that the problem was fixed, only for it to re-appear after 20 metres of driving.
Car went back in today and I got a call advising two of the TPMS units were 'faulty'. I was quoted £227 to have them repaired. I then (smugly) advised that I had the full Audi 'All component' warranty and that this would obviously be covered. After an hour's wait - I was advised this was not covered.
How can 'faulty' components not come under the umbrella of an 'all component' warranty? I asked. Apparently the batteries are not something that is covered...
If I have a spare moment over the next few weeks I'll be having a good look over the warranty paperwork - I doubt they were clever enough to exclude the TPMS batteries, but I have been wrong in the past!

It's great , The battery is a integral part of the sensor .How can they say it's not covered ???? The battery can't be replaced so they should replace the whole unit ...

I'm going for the 2-ponged approach gents ..just penned a prickly letter to the MD of the dealer advising how much of my time has been wasted with 2 trips and the problem not solved (they don't have the parts in stock) etc etc. I'll then do a letter to the warranty company and if I get no decent response out of them, I think I'll go to the Financial Ombudsman (presumably as a warranty co they're regulated by the FSA...)
