Cambelts

Does anyone know when the cambelts are due for replacement and has anyone had them done yet? What sort of cost is involved and are there any other things that ought to be done at the same time?

Hiya - see my post. DON'T leave it to 74K get it done sooner or you could have a very expensive replacement engine.

Overall cost with the longlife service £1600. All the cambelt parts were £600!

Thanks for your note, from your other post it looks like you were lucky with getting the work done when you did - as you say it could have worked out a lot more expensive than this. I think I'll be booking it in fairly soon, just to be on the safe side.

If you have not done so already, shop around the Audi dealers. King's Lynn and South Hereford have offered very good prices for a cambelt change, due to both garages offering a discount for cars over a certain age! In fact, these dealers came up cheaper than some Audi specialist garages. Don't forget to add on other parts too, like rollers, tensioner, water pump and maybe even thermostat (while they are in there anyway). I think these parts will come to around £300 - £400ish. Also, if you are in the quattro owners club, or maybe A N other club, South Hereford Audi offer parts discount.

I can do your belt for £350 + parts + vat , i can supply a nice courtesy car for the day , I've got Liverpool & Chester 15 min away so you can plan a weekend of it . grizz

Hi Grizz (sorry to hijack the thread quattro25).

What's the total cost of the cambelt change (parts+labour+vat) on an S6, in your hands ?

Also, could somebody clarify the timing of the change.
From the replies above - it's not clear !
Is it 40k, 60k or 8ok miles ?

Any other issues with the S6 ?

I am new to the site, found it looking for info on my 2002 S6 Avant and its upcoming 80/K mi service. I hope you guys can convert that to Km, I can't without looking at my speedometer.
Anyway, I was surprised to see all of the reports of cam (we call them timing) belt changes. On my '02 the manual says at 105K miles. That seems kind of high, but I suspect that they would recommed earlier changes if they were required.
I got mine in Oct 06 w/46K miles, now have about 76 K. Did the serpentine belt about 60K, a CV boot at 72K. Has been a very reliable car. Should I get the belt inspected at 80K?

Hello all,
My 2002 S6 avant has now turned over 100K miles and I decided that I will not gamble on the cam belt to last to 105K. It will be done within the next two weeks at a local independent German specialty shop that seems up to the task. Not sure about some of the posts stating that Audi's are always having issues, this has been one of the most reliable, trouble free cars I have ever owned. Not that I don't take care of it, but it deserves the care it gets, including the belt change. :D

Cam belt done :D !!
I asked the shop to save me the old belt and tensioners so I could inspect them, and they looked OK. The belt had no microcracks, the backside looked dull but nothing major for 100K miles. Whether it was stretched or not, I don't know :? . I thing I did notice, is that the whole engine sounds quieter on starting and idling :D . I haven't done much more than drive it home from the shop, but I'll be taking it out on the road soon, without having to worry about belt breakage at 7000 rpm :oops: . If your car is looking tired, you probably don't want to spend the $1500 or so, you're better off getting another car. But if you keep it pristine, and want it to last the long haul, it's one of the most important services you can do to protect your 4.2.
