ECU Mapping
ECU Mapping
If I were to fit a full milltek sys, Inc cats, what difference would there be between Revo and MRC custom mapping, is it worth the 400 mile round trip basically? As I have a mate who is a Revo dealer
Thanks
Thanks
RE: ECU Mapping
Having been to MRC yesterday, I would DEFINITELY recommend the trip.
REVO maps (I have one on my tdi) are good but wont compare to Doug's Custom Map...
All the guy's wanting BIG power visit Doug, NOT REVO. That speaks volumes.
Saw the 800bhp RS4 and Doug's 800bhp S4 too - will be interesting on the road !!

In my B7 S4 Avant it is under the dash to the right of the steering wheel, I know the B5 cars had it next to the rear ash tray.
Hi,
I'm a little bit suspicious of "custom maps" because people, generally, don't realise what's involved in re-mapping an Audi. There is NO publicly available documentation for Audi V8 engine mapping and certainly not for the S4 V8.
No one has reverse engineered the 4.2 V8 Audi map, unlike mapping for scoobies and the like - well I think someone did find what they thought might be an ignition timing map. For performance Jap cars there is a large "community" of DIY remapping going on and the Manufactures do participate. I think this is why people think it can be done with the S4.
So, I'd like to ask how does a relatively small outfit have the resources to reverse engineer the Bosch Motronic ECU? Even trying to find a map in all of the data and then figure out what the values all mean in a 3D map - mmmm. It's a needle in a haystack.
A REVO map is a REVO map and there is nothing that a 3rd party could do to "customise" it. REVO, certainly, don't provide any software to do this!
I would be careful that the "custom map" isn't just the REVO map - how would you know?
Call me cynical, but if something doesn't sound right it normally isn't.
Just my 2 cents worth, what does anyone else think?
Regards, Chris.

Cynical indeed!
I had a Revo and then went to MRC for the custom map in my B5 S4. When analysed after the Revo map my car was running incredibly lean which WOULD have caused problems should I have 'booted' it for long periods which Revo wouldn't even be aware of. The Revo is installed in your car and that's it - end of. How does that detect how your individual car performs...it can't.
Custom map is done in your car WHILST YOU ARE DRIVING via a laptop plugged into your ECU so the characteristics can be changed (and felt) whilst you drive so is completely geared to your driving style and car's characteristics. It's designed not just for speed but overal performance improvements and it does deliver. It's a no brainer, custom all the way.
Mhinea (owns MRC) has tuned VAG/Porsche cars for donkey's years in Europe and is a genius who will not leave your car until it's perfect, not just for you but for him too. Doug is the same. They love what they do and are bloody good at it.
I don't know anyone who has had a bad experience with them and trust me, there are some 'proper' enthusiasts on this forum who use MRC (and other custom tuning houses) and wouldn't think of going elsewhere..
Revo have a good reputation for what they do but to me it's like buying a suit off the rack or going to a tailor for that perfect fit.
I can't comment on the B6/7 S4 as I've not had mine done yet but it made a massive improvement over stock and Revo in my B5.
No contest in my opinion.

I have full confidence in custom mapping having had it done on my supercharged VR6, it's tuned specifically to one engine, not a generic engine code to suit all engines of that type
my main concern was weather the gains in the custom map over the revo or similar was worth the 400 mile round trip and fuel
I'd love to know how to do it, I watch mine get done at Stealth in Southam and couldn't get my head round what was happening on the lap top, clever stuff

Chris,
Just because nothing is publicly available doesn't mean no one has reverse-engineered the V8 S4 mapping
Up to you to be cyincal, but here's a small example of what we do, and trust me, if we had only found a few 3D ignition maps, we couldn't have gone that far...

Hi Mihnea,
good time to jump in on this thread. I bought my B6 S4 having already had a map @ 366bhp (have the documentation) and have since converted it to run on LPG as well (so dual fuel)
I am thinking of getting an MIJ exhaust system from the downpipes back complete with sports cats as well as an eventual K&N or similar (is a Cold Air Induction kit available?)
So my question is this, how does all this affect the existing map and how much will it cost to remap with the above?
Are you guys comfortable with an LPG car? can you map that as well? I know the BRC LPG system is good for 400bhp
thanks in advance

Hi Lee,
How does your car feel with 366bhp compared to standard? I'm trying to convince myself to get it maped.

I dont know mate, I bought it like this and it was the first one I went to see... lol, but I know that it doesnt have a jerky throttle as some have reported and in my mind, it feels a little less keen between 5K-7K rpm in thiird than it does between 3K-5K, but maybe that is the LPG, maybe thats the way all of the S4's are, maybe thats the map. really hard to say mate, but I can tell you this, I had a blast with a B7 S4 a couple of weeks ago and she wasn't closing on me, I was gaining about 2 car lengths on the straights if that is any guide.
