Buying RS4 B5 - tips?

Post by RS4B5WANTED » Tue Jul 14, 2009 10:31 pm

Hi folks, I'm new to the Forum here but thought it would be good to here some tips and pitfalls when buying a RS4. I'm looking for a black 2001 model with low miles, looked through Pistonheads and Autotrader but just want some advice from owners as to what i'm looking for. Any help would be great.
Sold my 2 door M3 because the wife wanted something more for the family when my son was born so this is my compromise!

Hello, I've just got rid of mine see link; http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1131031.htm.

Car was cracking, only sold it to get an Rs6
I have to say that i approaced the purchasing of the RS4 in exactly the same way as any other motor - being that it has to have an FSH (approved or Audi dealers only), if it's rattly then the cams are bad (it's been driven too hard) so walk away, it's got to be clean, cambelt at 40K (with water pump - check history) and every 40K onwards.

If it's had any mods then make sure they're kosher - as in done by someone like MRC, Unit 20, etc

IMOH you'll probaby give 16k ish (maybe more?) for a good average miler in black - but you'll probably have to be quick for the right one as it won't hang around if it's good.
Good luck

Can this noise (rattly) be confused with teppets? Isn' that normal for a car of that age/mileage though (80k+)..?

I ask as the one I'm buying sounds tappety when could - would hate to have been wrong, and it's cams on the way out...!
