Intake hose on S3

Post by david7m » Wed Nov 19, 2003 11:14 pm

I am thinking of buying an uprated intake hose, so I looked on the Forge Motorsport website. There's two, but presume its the cheaper one.

A review of it says it increases bhp by 14 !!!! This can not be true, right?????

I can't confirm from experience, but I do know that it is a weak point. I understand that chipped S3s can suffer from a 'collapsed' intake hose, so often get it uprated or a sleeve inserted IIRC.

So IF under high load, the suction causes the hose to begin to collapse, then I can see that there would be resistance to airflow. On this basis it is possible (in theory) that an uprated hose would have the effect of increased power.

However these are just my thoughts.

IIRC the collapsing hose problem affected earlier S3 and TT cars. Audi subsequently revised the hose. I can't be sure of the model year when this was corrected - hopefully someone else can.

One of the tuning sites (APR ?) has a video of the hose on a TT, IIRC, collapsing under load. All looks rosey, and then suddenly it just collapses and the power drops off.
Cool vid - I'll try and find the link

I had a sleeve put into mine which solved the problem. If you're not chipped then the hose doesn't collapse. The hose collapse is not a progressive crush but a fairly instant one at around 5000rpm. Video Here (8Mb)

Hoses since about 2002 seem to be fine so I'd only go for this as a performance mod rather than to prevent collapse on recent cars. On the TT forum a few people have had it with good responses but I have no personal experience of it or the claims made for it.
