RNS-D to RNS-E tips and information.

Post by GardinerG » Tue Feb 24, 2009 11:58 am

Rather than me putting an install guide together (there are a number around), I thought it might help if I made some specific RNS-D to RNS-E (for the RS6) info available.

Parts:
An RNS-E for an A6.
Sat Nav DVD from Audi or e-Bay (2007 or later for TMC)
Adapters: http://www.kufatec.de/shop/ part numbers 34521 and 33406
-Please check with Kufatec if you are unsure what you are ordering!
-This kit includes the radio removal tools.
-RS6s with the RNS-D Don't have the small BNS ;-), just select the other bits you have (or may want like the CD Changer).
You will need to join a couple of wires for the CAN connections so will need tools for this.

Some useful references:
http://www.audiforum.us/
http://home.comcast.net/~nelson.paiva (PDF Install of RNS-E into US RS6)
http://www.nsxjr.com/downloads.html (PDF Install of RNS-E into US A6 Allroad - very detailed)

The above guides are useful but they relate to replacing the Symphony 2 unit rather than the RNS-D.

Tips:
1. This install is easy if you get the right bits. I've heard bad things about some of the eBay adapters.
2. On the Kufatec adapter above the GALA wire was already wired in so you don't have to worry about it.
3. You will need to wire the RNS-E into the CAN bus behind the cluster, grey block (T32c) pins 5 (CAN hi) and 6 (CAN low). The Kufatec adapter has 2 wires that just need to be connected.
4. You will need to check the coding of the Radio with VCDS or similar post install.
5. It will take a while to find the satellites and sort itself out. The first local drive I went on the Sat Nav was all over the place. The next day I went for a longer drive and it was fine. I checked the satellites and GALA signal in engineering mode and all was ok.
6. There is very little space behind the unit itself to fit the adapters - there is space behind the AC unit if you can squeeze the blocks down into it.
7. Don't press on the LCD screen when pushing the unit in - yes I know it is obvious but some people forget!
8. To get TMC you need a later DVD (e.g. 2007 or later if I remember correctly!)
9. My arm rest cradle phone (Nokia) didn't work properly until I updated the firmware with the later DVD (Thanks for the tip PetrolDave!). This is done automatically when you insert a newer DVD for the first time.

Engineering Mode.
1. Turn on RNS-E.
2. Press the NAV button and release.
3. Press the top-left cursor button for 5 seconds and release.
4. Press the top-right cursor button for 5 seconds. Hold until the screen changes.

Note, sometimes this didn't work - usually because I was already on the NAV mode when I pressed the NAV button. I pressed "Radio" and tried again from 2 and it was fine.

*disclaimer - this information is provided as is, in that this is how I installed my RNS-E. If it doesn't work, tough. ;-)

3. You can use the CAN wires at the TMC unit under the dash rather than opening up the cluster etc.

It is easy to remove the cluster. Six of one and half a dozen of the other really, I just find it easy than crawling under the dash. :)

Hi - great write up!

Is the radio antenna adapter required from RNS-D to RNS-E? I had RNS-E fitted, but now have very poor radio reception, and am wondering if that's the cuprit? I don't have an original aerial, but it worked fine with the RNS-D head unit.

My experience with the RNS-E so far is that I can't access the weak stations like I used to get, now only the strong stations are available. Radio reception doesn't seem to be as good although I have only been driving locally so can't really say. I live in Fleet but can't pickup Guildford's 96.4 (I have 2 orange stations to choose from with the car on the drive).

There are some menu items that affect the radio sensitivity but for me they just limited the stations even more.

Sorry I can't help,

Please can someone give the answer to what is such an obvious question that no-one has written about it.....

What I will call the diagnostic pin set on the back of an RNS-D is smaller than the one on the RNS-E - so how do you connect it up to do the coding etc.....?
Bought all the other bits as discussed on this and other forums and the PnP for those is lemon - but this last bit has me scratching the bonce more than usual........

What diagnostic pin are you talking about? If you mean the 26 pin connector, then it is not used on the RNSE
You need to connect the CAN wires seperately.

coding is done via the 16pin OBD connector, and provided your RNS-E is connected properly, and with the CAN in situ, then you'll be able to code, no problems

OK - good.....or not. Thanks guys - told you it was a really stupid question.
Nav works fine, but no sound. Can't see CD changer or the OEM BT kit ....

Clearly I've totally stuffed this install.......perhaps time to start again....or hand over to a pro.....
DOH!!

No sound will probably be a wrong wire in the adapter, as the Bose uses a different wiring configuration, than normal non Bose cars. Maybe not switching the amp on.

CD changer again more than likely could be an adpater issue.

BT will need to be coded, on both sides.....RNS-E, and BT.

The round 11 pin connector on the back of the rns-d unit is for the TV tuner and is not used on the rns-e. If your car had a RNS-D with TMC then you need to rewire the can bus so the RNS-E will work with the dash display correctly.

1st question: do all the RNS-D on the RS6 have TMC?? mine is a '53. Pressing the info button just says no messages/info but doesnt actually say no TMC? Can it be added?

2nd question: is the RNS-E really much better than RNS-D???

3rd question: will any TravelPilot DX map disc work in the RNS-D???? i found a blaupunt one on eBay 2007/2008. or can only maps up to a certain year be used?
