what temp does your oil get up to?

1 oil doesn't break down at 250F...a good synthetic is good to 300 for short periods, normal operating temp is 212, to vaporize the water...
flashpoint is >400F
2 the temp displayed is the hotest it gets, in the sump, before it's cooled...
so by the time it gets back to the engine it's cooled down 20 to 40 F....
and temp is only one factor to breakdown: shear, contamination, etc.
changing oil every other week! how many miles?

Same for me but I haven't had mine long so not much experience yetsonny wrote:WOW those are high temps or maybe im NOT ragging m car hard enough!..lol
Normal drivign conditions are 96c and aspirated road drives (not track) around 106c
RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: what temp does your oil get up to?
I noticed that my normal oil temp (day to day driving) changed when i had my car serviced, it sat at a hotter temp around +4>6 degrees hotter! I can not confirm what oil was in the car prior to the oil change.

Good to see this thread -- I sleep a lot better at night now.
I came from a Mitsu Evo 8MR and used to run oil temps at 90C on normal driving, 130C on track. In the RS4, I'm at 99C on normal driving, 110C on spirited driving (ambient temp is around 40C here in Dubai at the moment) and was a little worried if there was something wrong with my car. Nice to know that this is 'normal'

Really? I strongly doubt it!MikeD wrote:There was a thread on this same topic some time back, I get to 138 on normal roads but opening the tap a bit , talking to Audi Germany re this due to the fact that oil starts to break down at 118 to 120ºC area so we loose above 50% of the oil's capability to protect..
504.00 oils are HTHS rated to over 150deg C. Any oil which starts to break down around 120deg C is NOT a genuine fully synthetic oil, and nor will it be 504.00 approved.

Re: RE: Re: RE: what temp does your oil get up to?
Wow - that is really 'old skool' advice! Modern, low viscosity, high quality synthetics can easily cope with mean oil temperatures of 150deg C. How do you think the factory filled 5w30 504.00 oils fair in even hotter places such as Dubai - and in the raging furnace-like turbo bearings of the RS6 motors?SR71 wrote:MikeD,
Have you spoken to the gurus (Guy) at Opie Oils (http://www.opieoils.co.uk) about your issues?
They're extremely knowledegable and might be able to advise you temporarily on a high temperature solution...maybe you need to move away from a multigrade oil for the summer? Something like a "60" oil except that in a V8 which revs to 8000+rpm, in theory, thats not ideal...

There is some debate on the 'factory fill' being Fuchs. Both VW and Audi clearly state that all their OEM engine oils are soley developed by Castrol - so how do Fuchs now enter this particular equation?SR71 wrote:I get all my oil from them - they're about the only place I know about in the country where I can find the Titan Fuchs factory fill oil for the RS4.

What are those temps in the international unit of centigrade?ArthurPE wrote:1 oil doesn't break down at 250F...a good synthetic is good to 300 for short periods, normal operating temp is 212,
Which has exactly what to do with the oils lubricating properties?ArthurPE wrote: flashpoint is >400F
Not quite. Yes, the temperature IS taken from the sump - but sump oil is categorically not the hottest location for the oil. Localised oil temperatures will be noticeably hotter on the small-ish volumes of oil which is sprayed onto the underside of the pistons. And the same can be said for the localised oil surrounding the valve stems of the exhaust valves.ArthurPE wrote:2 the temp displayed is the hotest it gets, in the sump, before it's cooled...
And although we arn't graced with turbos on the B7 RS4 - turbo bearings are arguably by far the hottest localised area for oil.
Rubish. For a modern automotive specific engine oil - its optimum operating temperature is in excess of 80-85 deg C. If the oil drops below 60deg C, it noticeably looses some of its lubricating abilites.ArthurPE wrote:so by the time it gets back to the engine it's cooled down 20 to 40 F....
Sort of agree - but only on generalistic terms. 503.00 and above oils have an additional HTHS - or 'High Temperature, High Shear' test - so won't be an issue. And then contamination - if your oil contains enough 'contaminents' to lessen the lubricating qualities of the oil, then either there is a problem with filtration (no element, damaged filter medium, or incorrect filter), or the oil is massively beyond its sheduled oil change interval.ArthurPE wrote:and temp is only one factor to breakdown: shear, contamination, etc.
Bonkers . . . . utterly bonkers.ArthurPE wrote:changing oil every other week! how many miles?
