Pikes Peak quattro design study combines 500bhp with all-terrain capability and MPV versatility.

Audi has drawn on its sporting success in two of the world's most famous races to develop its latest concept car - the Pikes Peak quattro - unveiled at this week's North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The name itself is inspired by the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Race held in the USA every June with up to 160 fearless drivers competing over a 12.4 mile course with 125 mph straights and 156 corners.

Audi has won this event three times in the past and the new concept car could tackle this gruelling course and much more. Indeed the technology used in the 500bhp engine is derived from the Le Mans winning cars of 2001 and 2002.

The Pikes Peak is described by Len Hunt, formerly Director of Audi UK and currently President of Audi North America, as three cars in one - "a high performance vehicle, a desirable sports utility and a flexible MPV."

There are currently no plans to put the Audi Pikes Peak quattro into full production, although Audi executives said they would be studying public opinion "very closely".

The design study is powered by a 4.2-litre V8, twin-turbo engine similar to the unit which powers the Audi RS 6 quattro, but with power increased to 500bhp, enabling an impressive 0-60mph acceleration time of just 4.7 seconds.

The interior is also innovative. A four + two-seat configuration enables the Pikes Peak quattro to adapt from sports car to heavy-duty off-roader to a large people-carrier. Off-road competence comes from the car's variable-height adaptive air suspension and quattro four-wheel-drive.

The ride height can be raised for rough terrain, but is automatically lowered when back on smooth roads. A glass roof provides plenty of light to the interior where six people can travel in three pairs of leather-upholstered seats, all of which are electrically adjusted. The interior also includes laser optics, a DVD entertainment system and Internet access.

Technical details on the exterior include loop-pattern door handles which extend when proximity sensors detect that the owner wants to get in. The handles are also illuminated, while lights in the exterior mirrors are used to light up the area around the car.

The Pikes Peak quattro's appearance is set off by massive five-arm double spoke wheels and run flat tyres which can be driven on after a puncture for up to 125 miles at speeds up to 50mph.

Chairman of the Board of Audi AG, Martin Winterkorn, said the company had a very successful year in 2002 in all markets despite tough economic conditions. He added that there was still "enormous potential" for the brand.

"We will be introducing a number of new models over the next five or six years - it has not escaped our notice that other German luxury car makers are still outselling us by two or three to one in some markets," remarked Mr Winterkorn.

In 2002, Audi sold 560,000 cars in Western Europe, up 3.8 percent and the highest sales figure in its history. In the United States sales were up 2.9 percent to 85,700.

Audi Pikes Peak quattro concept
by Nick Hull

Audi unveiled the 'Pikes Peak' quattro four-wheel drive concept vehicle. The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Race is very much part of the successful history of Audi Motorsport, being won 3 times in 1985-87 in the Audi Sport Quattro S1.

The Audi Pikes Peak quattro is a crossover four-door 4+2-seat hatchback combining the dynamism and comfort of a luxury sport sedan, the off-road competence of an SUV plus the innovative 3-row seating concept as used in luxury vans.

The design features some typical Audi cues such as the side window DLO but offers many new elements for Audi design including a new nose and tail treatment, a sharp undercut crease line running from headlamps to taillamp and a complimentary rising sill line to link up with the rear bumper. The big, rounded nose of the car is capped by a new divided grille design with vertical perforated fins flanked by ‘technical’ Xenon Plus headlamps. The wheelarches are flared and are delineated by matte painted lips.

At the rear, the tailgate extends into the rear fenders and, as the tailgate rises completely with the main taillamps, features a second set of marker lamps once opened.

Inside, all the centrally located controls have polished aluminum surrounds and clear-glass covers. The front center console is arranged like a bridge from the fascia to the rear end of the front seats. Between the individual second-row seats there is a retractable center console containing controls for the infotainment electronics, a cold-store compartment, shelf space and cup holders. The beige and turquoise interior is finished in nappa leather.

Power comes from a 500 hp 4.2L V8 engine with twin turbochargers and FSI direct gasoline injection.

Also making it's debut at the Detroit show was the LWB Audi A8 with 5 inch longer wheelbase and 4.2L V8 engine.

Early drawing of the concept of Pikes Peak

Image

At the North American International Motor Show Audi exhibited a sport concept study: the Pikes Peak quattro, for all on-road driving and moderate off-road terrain. It has been developed exclusively for this debut at America’s most important automobile exhibition. This impressive study for an Audi that is typical in its suitability for several market segments, takes its name from Pikes Peak, a mountain some 4,300 meters (14,110 feet) high that rises abruptly out of the Colorado Plain of the Rocky Mountains. It can be seen from many miles away and is also called 'America’s Mountain'.

This four-door 4+2-seat hatchback is a draft design that indicates the systematic evolutionary path that current Audi design could take – but it is more besides: the Pikes Peak quattro illustrates the novel Audi concept that spans several segments in the premium automobile category. The Audi Pikes Peak quattro is notable for the manner in which it combines the sheer power of the legendary Audi quattro and an advanced design concept that brings together elements from widely varying types of automobile. The Audi Pikes Peak quattro is a crossover model. It possesses typical qualities from a number of different automobile categories. From the luxury sport sedan it adopts dynamism and comfort, but its off-road competence comes from its variable-height adaptive air suspension and quattro driveline. This is not all: the Audi Pikes Peak quattro is equally convincing with its innovative seating concept with variable elements as used in luxury vans.

Well known from the Audi RS 6, the V8 engine with twin turbochargers has been further developed and now has a power output of 500 hp. A decisive factor in this power hike is the advanced FSI direct gasoline injection principle, which indicated that new standards were about to be set when it was used on the competition cars that scored victories in the 2001 and 2002 Le Mans 24-Hour races and in the American Le Mans Series. Powerful FSI engines are already in production for the Audi A2 and A4 models.
