iPod, iTrip...

Post by Carps » Mon Nov 17, 2003 10:00 pm

Does anyone know a reliable source for buying an iTrip for an 3G iPod in the UK ?
I have seen a lot on eBay, but have little faith in the source having nearly been ripped of for electronics on eBay once before. I'm looking for a private seller, or an 'under the counter job' at a shop

TIA

Hi John,

An iPod is a music storage device that can hold approx 1000 CDs, not SatNav
The iTrip enables the iPod to transmit very low power FM, that you can tune your car radio into.

see it here -> iPod <-

On the subject of SatNav, having seen SmartNav in operation with traffic updates and diversions that would be my choice of navigation toy BTW, the Garmin with the accelerometer for 'loss of signal' continuity is pretty damn cool

Now I know what you do for a living

Still want one though - the thought of having all my CDs available through any radio I happen to be near is appealing. I have so many CDs that don't get a listen now as they are tucked away somewhere to make room for me - I figure this way at least I'll get to hear them, even if it is at the cost of a bit of quality. To be honest, I probably wouldn't notice anyway, being a bit of a deaf git

I bought one a week ago from ebay. I bought it from a guy who has lots of ipod accessories (he's based in NYC), he had a high rating so i gave him a go. It got delivered 4 days later, i was very impressed. He emailed at every stage of the process, acknowledgement of order, acknowledgement of payment & acknowledgement of shipping.

I use it in my S4, I have to say it works a lot better than i thought, its all about finding the right frequency. By choosing a frequency in the middle of the FM Band you get alot better stereo separation than choosing one at either end.

The iTrip works with odd frequencies ie 90.1, 90.3,90.5,90.7 & 90.9 from 88 to 108.

You would obviously get better quality if the unit was hard wired to your stereo but apart from that its alot better than the messy old cassette adapter.

I saw an iPod holder that fits in your cars cup holder, so if you have a well placed cup holder then its a great accessory for your ipod if your planning on using it in your car.

Hope this helps

Guys,
I've just seen a product for the iPod called Ice Link.
This is what you need, apparently it plugs into the back of the audi head unit and allows you to control the ipod thru the cd controls. You plug the iPod connector into the CDChanger plug at the back of the head unit. You can then plug your ipod into a connector placed somewhere in your car
to get it working, it also provides power to your ipod.

This is definately the way to go

Check it out:

http://www.ihavetohave.it/acatalog/ICE-Link_Audi.html

If i can get hold of it I will be selling my itrip.

That looks pretty good. Not to sure about how useful the stereo controls are going to be though, if you can just FF and rewind.
How do you find the quality with your FM link though ?
This appeals to me as it will work on any car that you get in (assuming it has a stereo), so you can subject all your friends to your choice of music regardless who is driving
