Recommended oils/fluids

Post by roi354 » Tue May 19, 2009 1:34 am

I'm going to have an oil change soon and I intend to have ALL fluids changed at the same time so can you tell me what brand/grade you favour for:
Engine,
Gearbox,
Diff,
Brakes,
Coolant,
Power Steering, etc

Cheers,
Rob

Here's my suggestion though would like to know about the diff/box - I did purchase some Fuch 75/90 gear oil which I was told was OK for quattro diffs but it was a while ago.

Engine - VW Audi Quantum Synta Platinum synthetic oil - 5w/40 (the replacement for Synta Gold)
Gearbox - ?
Diff - ?
Brakes - Castrol SRF synthetic brake fluid
Coolant - VW Audi G12 ++
Power steering - Febi hydraulic fluid

Castrol SRF is an expensive and excellent choice if your 'hard on your brakes', and need to change your brake fluid regularly (say annually or after x miles of track use) , however its not such a good choice for use as a general purpose fluid, and doesnt last as long.

You can use it only pretty much any setup - I always used to use SRF. It was very pricey, but very re-assuring - £30 every 2 years vs. you're fluid boiling on the track = worth doing.

I was recommended this fluid by my local garage who use it on all their race cars and at £12 or so a litre I can afford to change it whenever I replaced the pads/after trackdays etc.... No downsides for normal road use either as far as I could tell.
