Rubbish AM Reception

Post by lushman » Tue Dec 16, 2008 12:29 am

Hi, I have terrible AM reception on my RNS D sat nav unit. I listen to Absolute radio (Virgin Radio) daily but recently I have found the reception to be very poor. This has never happend before in any radio that I have had in my car only this one.
Can anyone suggest an idea to cure this? Is it a case of fitting a new ariel that will increase signal strength or am I barking up the wrong tree!

Thanks Paul

The RNS-D connects to a diversity antenna system in the car that already has built-in amplifiers. Sounds like maybe one of them has gone faulty.

What's FM reception like?

Is reception any better or worse when you turn the heated rear window on?

Hi, FM is great. There is no obvious change when the rear heater is switched on, however there can be a lot of white noise when driving in certain areas where there are a lot of pylons.
Its getting to the stage that I am running out of cd's to listen to!

FM has diversity so if one of the amps is faulty but the other is OK then FM will be OK, so I reckon it's the amp that's used for AM & FM that's faulty.

Not sure which one that is though...

Hi everyone - I noticed this the other day - rear heater switched on badly affected my FM reception. Is this a common fault? what's the fix?

I also too had non existent AM reception but Audi fixed it for a while with a new Antenna base (f@cking expensive, but under warranty). Now I have another source of interference being a consistent but intermittent whine on AM, which seems to disappear when engine is switched off. Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

Olly

Hi Folks, I have finally discovered my poor AM reception. Diversity switch as petrol dave diognosed for me.
With the woes I have been having in getting the right cable for the Phatbox to connect to the cd changer cable I had to remove the cables from the diversity switch and discovered one of the pins on the radio cable to be corroded. I tried cleaning it, however the corrosion has obviously spread onto the circuit board.
I unfortunately took the decision to order from the stealers for £111, but if I can listen to my AM without all the interference I will be a happy man!

Hi Lushman,

do you have a part no for your switch - I'd like to compare it to the part Audi fitted on mine, which they called a switch box, which did nothing to sort the problem.

Cheers

Yes that's a very common fault. The rear window heater is also used as an aerial so there is a filter unit that blocks the DC from the aerial input of the radio, when that filter fails you get poor FM reception. The cure is to replace it.

Hi Olly, I will put up the part number later as I am still in work and it would be easier to get it from the old one as opposed to digging the new one out from the boot!!
