Star Performance vs MRC and Unit 20

Post by pomy » Fri May 01, 2009 7:23 pm

My nogaro 02 b5 is due its cambelt service even though its only done 33k miles, i've already spoken to Lucas at MRC about getting my car booked in for that and a few other upgrades... it's just the distance that's the real problem.
Unit 20 isn't exactly nearby either.. but Star Performance is only 50miles or so away from me.. i stay in Glasgow.
Has anyone had any experience of Star Performance when it comes to tuning the 2.7 biturbo engines?
Are they as thorough when working on our cars as MRC are etc?

Lucas recommended having the car trailered down to them and then driven back up, but that would cost 500 quid one way and i'm trying to keep the mileage low too.. aswell as the fact my business is open 7 days leaving me f**kall time for driving up and down the country

I also want to eventually go for a big turbo fmic upgrade aswell and everything that goes with it... custom straight pipes, suspension, arbs, stripped interior etc etc... neccessary things first though!
Would anyone here trust Star Performance's work enough to recommend i have the work done by them?

Any help would be much appreciated guys... Cheers!

star performance vs mrc and unit 20

Post by jds67 » Sat May 02, 2009 6:45 am

Hi, my cars previous owner used star as he lived in Glasgow and rated them highly, my car is running all the items you want to upgrade to. I've spoken to them about the work they have done and they seem to be very helpful. I think you will find them all equally as good, but your destination surely makes star the most practical option. My car has done 29k and is due cambelt service so i would be interested to see what quotes you get. Regards Jarrod.

Never used star, know a few people who have and had good wok done.

Im in EK and got the AA to take mine down to MRC, I was only about £70 for the years breakdown cover, with relay included, youve got to get a breakdown guy to come out to check the car to see if it can be fixed (should technically be broken down. Tell them the turbos have bitten the bullet and you wont run the engine. Then an AA flatbed will show up to pick it up and deliver ;)

I have used star.
Jim is very knowledgable. sometimes a bit short on the phone but knows his stuff.
he did some monster RS6 that made the local papers for something.

don't think he is up there with MRC in terms of graound breaking development but he is well known for good workand not just for VAG engines.

I am having some work done there in a few months

Excellent mate... that's reassuring to know. I'm definately going to give these guys a chance, the distance being the deal breaker of course :D

Unit 20 gets my vote.

Never been to Star Performance so cant comment on them, as MRC to be honest.

UNIT 20 ok its a P.I.T.A having to get to Chester but its definately worth it because Grizz and Lee do a great job and also 2 great guys to get mercilessly ribbed about the cars we also have!!

That was barrys ABT tuned RS6 - In the Daily Record for being tuned to do 200mph and Roy Keane bought it off him, got rid of it becasue a civic type R beat him on track - IIRC!

Bring it down Pomy and we'll do the cambelt and some other bits - if you are wanting it tuned in the future you don't want to have to retime the car to get hte most out of the tune.

You know Doug i had my heart set on getting it over to you boys anyway, makes sense to have the work done by the one company who've already done plenty of s4's/rs4's. I also wanted to make sure the car was healthy and i know you boys check that properly anyway.
Btw Doug, my Movits are needing skimmed or reconditioned, pads got stuck to the discs in storage after a wash and the brakes now judder braking from high speed... can you sort that too?
I'll be phoning down soon... i better get that aa truck ready and tell them my turbos are fuc**d! lol

Cheers for the help boys

What movits do you have on it? there are other options for discs - APs or b7 or brembo discs.

I'm sure they're 4 pots.. drilled 380mm at the front and 3?? at the back with a handbrake caliper.
They were great before the pads got stuck to them... don't want to buy an entire new set of brakes if i can help it, the previous owner had AMD fit them and they've only done a few thousand miles. The car also has an SKN remap, milltek catback and 19'' bimotos... other than that it's standard.
