How do I transfer my itunes files / playlists onto SD cards?

Post by Markeemark » Tue Apr 28, 2009 8:35 pm

We're having difficulty in getting our itunes off the itunes library and onto the SD Card. We using an Apple Mac and can see the SD cards on the desktop but can't get the itunes files to be in mp3 file format which I think they need to be to work on the SD card. Most of the files say that the file is protected and are in AAC format.

Has anyone achieved this and if so, how?!!

All help very much appreciated.

Bunch of threads on this if you search using the "itunes" and "sd card" tags...

Here is one:

What if your not using iTunes?
I've been trying to transfer some of my cd's this week, using windows media player to drag and drop onto the SD card. The transfer is fine but RNSE keeps showing 'Unknown Files' (but shows the number of kb's used)

Anybody know where I'm going wrong?

max_b I use Windows Media Player with no problems, but the trick is that you have to tell Windows to show you all the files on the SD card (including hidden ones) because Media Player "adds" several hidden files into the folder which you're dragging as well (CD cover art and folder display details for Windows). Remove them and you should be fine.

I would strongly advise people transfer music/store music on their PC's in MP3 file format. If you rip music in Windows Media Player, go into rip options and make sure you select to rip into MP3 file format. WMA files will not transfer to other PC's and devices as well (if at all)

I would also ditch using itunes for anything other than getting music on your ipod. Its crap, and anything you buy/rip normally won't play in much else then itunes without a lot of messing about.

7digital, mp3sale are pretty good download sites, you can get files in MP3 and use them on 99% of devices and music players.

Sound Taxi is a great program for converting and handling IPOD files and converting them to MP3 format, the latest version was 19.95 dollars and will automatically convert all you IPOD files without you doing a thing. Best 20 bucks I spent.

The RNS-E won't play anything except MP3 files so any other format would be a total waste of time!

Yes I know! But itunes stores music in a completely different file format, ripping music can be done it lots of ways and other devices can use WMA files not just Mp3. The only file format that works with 99% of external devices is MP3, just making sure others knew that.

Yeah good point that most people have iTunes setup to it's default to store music as either M4A or M4P, and most people leave WMP set to it's default of WMA.

Second that iTunes is crap...I won't go near it!

right, just so I've got this right, I need to rip my cd's again onto Windows Media Player in MP3 format (or is there an option to convert them from whatever they currently are into MP3 format) and then I should be able to drag and drop straight onto the SD card, as long as I carry just the 'tune' and nothing else?

In regards setting each CD copied over into individual folders and naming the individual tracks, to use in the cars display, is there an easy way of doing this?

I use foobar2000 for this.... you can point it at a directory already containing music and select the stuff you want to convert. I use this to convert my lossless library to MP3 for the SD card.

Depending on what encoding options you used, you might want to rip your CD's again :(

Whatever format your files are in, I would search for a xxx2mp3 converter before you do anything else.

For instance, I use Napster to download all my music then run the wma files through a wma2mp3 converter and upload to ITunes and then I can sync the database with all my "mobile" devices.

I only use ITunes as a database, nothing else.

arrgh!!! this is doing my head in!!

I ripped another cd this evening to Win Med Player and set the format to MP3 (its looks like the cd I did the other night also copied to Win Med Player in MP3 format) but when I moved the tracks to the SD card and tried in the car, same message as the other night > 'Unknown Files'

I'm obviously falling behind the times....anybody able to help out?
