Going to buy my first rs4 tuesday.... Advice please!!
Many thanks for that info timmiline. That link to the thread has highlighted some intersting points. The paintwork isnt sounding to clever, yet no one on there mentioned the noisey engine???? There was mention of an engine code that popped up (EGT) what does that represent, is it serious???
I'll have tobe very cautious but at least with all the comments from you guys on here, I've my eye's opened wider and this will give me a more level headed view on things and i'll be able to spot things that maybe I would have missed.

EGT, exhaust gas temps, so I'd imagine a shot MAF or something similar if it's that.
Are you still going to see it? I am about tomorrow but not sure if I'll be available at lunchtime.

Hiya Contigo,
Yes i'm still going down to his work tomorrow. Should be there for around 2ish, what time do you think you could get there. his business is in Ascot, I dont know how far this is away from you??
EGT...I believe he's had MAF work done but what and when I dont know. Can this be expensive to sort out?

I think the EGT sensors (2 of then on the car) are about 200 notes. usually if there are codes flagged up it points to one of the sensor's. Without seeing the codes I don't know which one needs replacing and if indeed it is the sensor that's gone.
It's about 70-75 mile round trip for me and it all depends on how busy I am in the morning. PM me with your details and let me know when you are an hour away and I'll see what I can do.

Hi FazS3,
Yes the reason why I think its got sold on it is that someone did offer to but and left a deposit so he put sold on the ads, then on the day the car was supposed to have been collected, the buyer cancelled. So he then rang me, because i'd mailed almost every day to see if the buyer had collected. So I told him it was a good as sold to me, as long as the car was right????? I dont believe he's upto no good I just think he wants shut now as he has a new car and he's had alot of interest from ebay.

Only me again...Just worrying myself to death here on this forum!!lol
Noisey engine, how noisey should they be, this BIG cam issue is not good. If i;m going to check this car tomorrow and I've never even listened to one of these engine close up, then, how can I compare??? are they normally a bit nocky or tappy or clicky??? when htese cams start to ware and get noisey can this be heard with the bonnet down, sat in the car or just with your head against the engine???lol
Whats an MAF as I believe this car has had work done on it and i've rean that this can have effects on the cam ware???
lol

Where's the noisey engine idea come from?
I rode in it and the engine sounded fine.
The question with the paint is whether you're bothered about it having been painted per se–because it implies it's been damaged–or whether you're concerned about the quality of the paint. I thought it looked fine.

Hi Timmilne,
Sorry I dont want to sound stupid, it was just, I was just going off comments that had been sent to me from people who had seen the car. They only passed comments on the noise from the engine which they said sounded tappety would they weren't posative it was the a cam issue. And with all this talk on the cams at the moment I was wanting to know how I could be sure of what I'm listening for.
So you have looked at the engine? How did it all seem to you???
The body work im not to sure about yet, I'll just have to see it for myself. I would want the car a clean as poss and if it needs painting, then i'll get it done as long as there's nothing to scarey underneath. That rubbing on the tailgate needs a close look at!

I gave the whole car a cursory look, since I tend to pay more attention to who I'm buying off, and I liked this guy. But, you should see for yourself.
There have been a number of cars at this kind of money / mileage recently, and they seem to come in bunches, so maybe just wait a while if you're not sure.

Very little experience with RS4's in detail, sorry, but I've had other cars much faster/ scarier than these. My view is that if these cars are so temperamental that you have to bring a specialist along with you in case there's some terminal engine noise, then maybe they're best avoided full-stop.
Reading this forum can give the (unwarranted?) impression that these cars are innately unrealiable, what with cam-wear, MAFs, etc etc. There seems to be a lot to go wrong, but people here seem to like that.
I've kind of gone off the idea, somewhat for this reason. They just don't grab me where they should. If I was really smitten, I'd forgive the car when it started going awry–which I think is true for many of the people here, they just love 'em. I think I'd be OK with it when it's all running good, but I'd start to get annoyed when it starts producing big bills, and that seems quite likely, unfortunately.
Still, I think they're one of the prettiest cars ever made and are a very practical answer to the one-car-does-all problem.

eyeball. knowing what i do now i would definitely take a wannabe purchase to a specialist for the once over before buying it. it may cost a few quid to do but it would be money well spent. when i bought mine the egt sensor went the day after and there was boost leaks and a few other bits and peices. all bread and butter stuff to someone who knows the cars but a total nightmare for the novice. they do cost a lot to run and maintain so factor that in aswell. if you get one thats been looked after by unit 20 or mrc youll be getting a good one . if not then take it to one of the above specailists for a once over before you buy because a few jobs can soon cost a few grand. if the seller wont let you do this , walk away

timmilne I take it your talking about the rs4 in general...but what about this, there doesnt seem tobe many codes thrown up but I recon an independent check is needed. im sat here feeling worried but i suppose thars normal in this case.lol
Jimbo, yes I believe it has shown a EGT code up but thats all ive read on here. Contigo kindly offered to come and run a check for me if he gets the chance. I've pm'e him but had no reply as of yet but I've got my finfers crossed he can make the trip. If not i'll just have to see what the seller says about getting it checked out??
