Clunk

Post by ollys » Mon Apr 13, 2009 1:24 am

Hi everyone - Happy easter!

Getting a clunk from the rear of the RS4. Seems to happen most often when moving away at normal speeds in first gear. Sometimes, but not always, I can feel a clunk through my hand holding the gear stick in first just when the clutch engages moving off. This seems to happen most often when moving away uphill.

Sometimes the clunk can be heard coming off the gas a moderate speeds, though I can't hear it at all when getting happy on the gas. I can't seem to replicate the sound willingly.

Car has H&R arbs with strengthening brackets and PSS9. Had snub mount and DTS since I bought the car so I am sure it's not driveline shunt. I am thinking diff mounts?

Any help would be appreciated to self diagnose, before I have to brave some sort of local garage.

Cheers

Olly

Could be diff mounts, but maybe worth checking the exhaust brackets.

The one immediately in front of the rear box is prone to breaking off due to age.

Hi Graeme,

It's not said exhaust bracket as that had to be welded up to get through the Mot the other day. Checked under the car as far as I can - both droplinks are fine. Just been out this morning and it's definitely getting more pronounced and seems to be coming from the drivers side rear of the car.

Have you looked at the front engine mount, the one bolted to the front cross member? The engine/gearbox does move quite a bit under acceleration/deceleration and this mount takes a lot of abuse.

Had similar noises with a couple of previous cars, check all the CV joints for play while you're underneath it.

ATB

Thanks for the replies - Sorry should have said that i have the snub mount and tyres are all evenly worn.

CV joints might be the answer. Definitely seems to be localised around the driver's side rear wheel. Not sure if the occasional clunk when pulling away in first that I can feel though the gear stick is related or not...

Ok - just had both rear wheels off for a close inspection. Nothing obviously loose, but the driver's side drive shaft has a small amount of play in it, I could move it in and out by hand probably a 2-3 mm which isn't present on the passenger side. Could this be the problem and if so what's causing the play?

Wear in the inner CV joint is probably the culprit then on this one.

I think this explains it in most parts.

So the Inner CV joint mounts the diff. As I said, I'm no expert but it does seem like it could well be related to the CV joints rather than the Diff.

Thanks for the info - v. interesting

I agree - the fact that one drive shaft has play points to this in my mind too.

Now - which incompetent Audi stealership do I get to have a look at this........... :?

Well if you are London then I think that alot of people would take theirs to Fontain at Iver, they are generally pretty reliable.
