Do remaps really make a difference to mpg? Anyone tested it "scientifically"?

EDIT: 8-9 mpg in town (and that's with feather boots). Low 20s' cruising at 80.

Well had the gearbox remapped and in tiptronic mode will do 30mph in 5th (before then I couldn't get it to shift out of 3rd). At 30mph the engine runs on tickover in 5th which is wierd but does have fuel saving advantages.

That sounds pretty good. I'd like the gearbox remapped, but not interested in power increases. IIRC MRC don't do just the gearbox remap...

This may sound like a silly question but what rpm does the engine have to be turning for the alternator to charge the battery?

Re-map does make a difference at least my experience of the MRC re-map suggests a 10-15% gain (and this is based upon the last few months of driving around London now at around 12mpg).

Is MRC the only place to offer gearbox remaps?

@james: sorry, off topic here, but how do you find the PSS9s driving around in London? What have you got them set at?

Don't think that is correct. I'm confident that Revo doesn't include the box, and that MRC does. I don't think the CC one does either, but doubtless the Grizzmeister will soon correct me if I'm wrong on that!

Its funny how if you mention you have an "interesting" car someone always asks what mpg do you get?? They always look at me strangely when i say I have no idea!!
GardinerG, I'm pretty sure that once your battery light goes out on the dash then your alternator is charging. At tick over, is your light out??

I suppose it depends on how many eleccy devices you have on, but I guess I am going back to the old days where people used to plug in vast sound systems with amps and 6 extra high powered spot lamps without uprating their alternator.

Have seen low single figures when right foot planted and even on motorways only mid to high 20s.

@james: sorry, off topic here, but how do you find the PSS9s driving around in London? What have you got them set at?

Bilstein PSS9 for around London make the RS6 liveable but still firm, have them set at 7 due to all the potholes and speedbumps (9 too soft). Worthy upgrade especially with ARBs and MRC re-map!
