DIS replacement / fix / upgrade

Post by easto » Sun Jan 04, 2009 2:41 pm

DIS is finally getting on my nerves. It's now ridiculously bad, cant read anything at all on it. Its definately got worse this winter (think temperature does affect it...)

So what options are there - Ive done a few searches but not uncovered too much apart from it costing around 400 + Fitting

Ive seen an ad on Ebay for VDO screens for less than £100 but they need soldering into place.
Has anyone tried this?

What other things have people tried to fix the problem?

Any advice appreciated.

Out of curiosity...

Do you need to send the whole cluster for repair?
How easy is it to get the bits from the car, i.e. is it a major dash stripdown, or a couple of screws and plugs to remove the necessary parts?

IIRC you do send the whole dash pod.

It is just a couple of screws. Think there is a 'how to' with pictures in the S4 forum from a while back (poss. posted by Docurley).

Ive had a quick search and found a how to guide. I've not got a well stocked garage so needed to see what tools I'd need.
Removed the steering wheel cover and its 2 'star drive' screws that hold it in. then it appears to be one plug at the back.

You have to take the unit out and ship to BBE REMAN. They say a 2-3 day turnaround. 2 years unlimited mileage warranty. 150 plus postage.

I'm away with work so doing it Thursday before I leave as the car is undrivable anyway with the dash out.

currently toying with adding newer style silver rings whilst its out....but think it goes against the rest of the interior and the age of the car. not sure yet.

I got in touch with this guy:

http://www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk/repai ... udi/a4-99/

And he quoted me "£179 full rebuild with new DIS display. 5 years warranty", and I belive that included p+p.

Sorry just got back from hols - fitted the dash yesterday.

Need to mail the company back tomorrow or look at an Audi with similar DIS. The dis just doesn't look right from memory. Its very faint, although no lines are evident. It is just readable.
When you look at it from the passenger side it appears much more clearer , red text on black background.
But from straight on its got a constant visible red hue. Which makes it unpleasant to view.

The pixels also fade out as the display changes - again, cant recall that happening before.

Is there a polariser in front of the DIS display, sounds like it has not been orientated correctly. Keep us posted, I’d like to get mine done if you are successful.

Got exactly the same on mine and was repaired by BBA Reman!! + i can no longer view my sat nav. Not sure if it is communicating through a different CAN or something.

As you say when viewed straight on it seems 'hazy' but from an angle all seems ok but the display is light red on red and not red on black,if that makes sense

Must find the time to give BBA Reman a call and get it resolved.

Spoke to Nigel at BBA Reman today and he confirmed that they have had a few issues ( similar to what we have experianced ) with some of these DIS replacements and that he was in the process of trying to source a different manufacturer from Japan and to phone him back tomorrow, which i will do and report back
