Need help with RNS-E and Instrument Cluster codes

Post by snoopra » Wed Dec 24, 2008 5:32 am

OK, I got the yellow symbol on the cluster for the oil sensor (oil level/temp switch).
Switch was replaced but the sensor light is still on. Second, I'm planning to upgrade my transmission (the weakest link other than the DRC) but lately I've noticed slight slippage during hard acceleration. Third, I installed a RNS-E which works great, sounds great! But since installation, I always get 2 codes while scanning; 00625 and 02005. I did a scan this morning and here's the readout;

RE: Need help with RNS-E and Instrument Cluster codes

Post by PetrolDave » Wed Dec 24, 2008 9:10 am

The RNS-E errors are simple enough:

1) your speed signal wire is not connected - and it must be on a C5 A6 since there is no speed signal on the CANbus for the RNS-E to use.

2) your coding does not match the state of the Bose pin. If you have Bose then the pin must be grounded AND you must code for Bose. If you don't have Bose then the pin must be open circuit and you must code for non-Bose.

There's a site dedicated to retrofitting the RN-E and MMI - see http://audiforum.us

Thanks. I have a C5 RS 6, I'm not sure about the CAN-BUS. I ran the wire behind the instrument cluster, is this the speed signal wire? Is the wire harness different for BOSE and NON-BOSE? I'm installing a Multimedia adapter some time in the coming weeks so I'll verify the harness and grounding status. What about the "check DTC Memory of Instrument Cluster" code?

That description isn't enough to tell. What pin on the RSN-E did you connect to what pin on the instrument cluster?
snoopra wrote:Is the wire harness different for BOSE and NON-BOSE?
Bose doesn't need anything connected to the RNS-E A connector (all the speakers are amplified with Bose), and some adapters suppliers ground the Bose pin directly (which is stupid because routing it through to the Bose pin on the adapter would mean they would be able to make a common adapter for Bose and non-Bose).
snoopra wrote:What about the "check DTC Memory of Instrument Cluster" code?
Sorry, I don't have a clue about that one.

All this is telling you is to check the fault codes (DTC=Diagnostic trouble codes) in the Instrumnet cluster (17)

Which is probably showing a code about a communication error with the RNS-E - possibly an intermittent one from when you did the swap.

Clear the codes and see where you are, clear out the modules that have no faults and send the rest in. Check the wiring to the oil sensor too...

I followed installation instructions from http://www.htms.org/ but this website is down now. Not sure which pin is connected behind the inst cluster.
I'll clear the DTC in 17 and check the oil switch wiring. Thanks

OK, still can't figure out what is 'incorrectly coded" on the RNS-E. Cleared. DTC in inst block 17, still have code. Unable to trace oil switch wiring without pulling motor. Any other suggestions?

Your RNS-E is saying that the speed signal is missing on the external speed wire that the C5 platform requires - so that needs checking.

Regarding coding, your coding is 519611 which translates to:

5 = C5 A6/S6/RS6
1 = front speaker diagnostics off (this can be 0 even with Bose but this won't cause the coding error)
9 = Bose
6 = US spec phone module - is this correct?
1 = no additional tuners
1 = no CD changer, no MFSW, no TV tuner - is this correct?

Why have you coded the instruments to communicate with the telematics module?

Thanks for the response Dave.
With the radio coding, I don't have a phone module. I do have a multimedia adapter with a DVD player. What should the coding be?

The telematics module coding was there when I got the car, how do I change it or what should the coding be?

Next question. Could the incorrect coding cause the short code on the oil switch?
