Average Speed Cameras

Post by DickyC » Wed Nov 19, 2008 10:18 am

Now here's a good story! The processors used in Average Speed Camera set-ups can only compare vehicles in one lane.

If a vehicle changes lane between the cameras, the data is not resolved.

We just need someone to volunteer to try it. :D

But surely if there are more than 2 it will not work. If you switch after the first one, then once you go through the second one you will be measured between that and the 3rd or the 1st and the 3rd!

Ah, the system I'm familiar with has two cameras per lane, one at either end of a measured distance. These even more sinister multiple camera set-ups you mention are new to me.

I'd suggest weaving from lane to lane at speed but that might to draw unwanted attention.

how about just slowing down for a few minutes instead of weaving around trying to evade the cameras?

seen a few duty heroes last weekend doing this in roadworks on the M74.... hope they have a winged "minder" when in court facing Judge Judy to explain their antics.

The easiest option I find is just to set the cruise control - job done, and no crossing of fingers, etc.

If they can get a camera to read a number plate i.e. ANPR, them no doubt they can match these registrations irrespective of which lane they started or finished in, probably takes a dozen lines of software to do this QED. As Graeme says, set the cruise control (the only option I would insist on)

More research (I beaver away behind the scenes, you know) reveals one of those quirks of law that make you wonder what law makers do all day.

Apparently, the system is perfectly capable of recognising and tracking cars that change lane, it's just that its ability to do this isn't recognised in law because it hasn't been type tested yet!! One lane, yes. More than one lane, no.

That is so wacky, it has to be true. :D

The RS2 doesn't have cruise cotrol, btw. Well, mine doesn't. :(

Funnily enough, I was reminded of this thread on the way back along the M4 from Newbury at the weekend.

That certainly was true. Apparently the company rushed the development and certification of the average speed cameras. They had to do a large amount of testing to be able to legally prove the system was accurate. They didnt have time to prove (legally) that it was reliable if the car changed lane.

I guess a good laywer can argue their way out of anything, and it wouldve taken them too long to prepare defence against any lane changing argument.

Dont hold me to this though! By now they may have had chance to finish their testing!

Does anybody actually know anyone who has been caught by an average speed camera?

I belong to three car clubs and this has been discussed at all of them and NO ONE knows anybody who has ever been caught by this system
Unless you know different

I think the issue is do you want to buck the system or bend over and take it.

Nope I dont know of anyone either.... And ive definetly been through a few too fast.

Does anyone know if the M42 cameras are average or just speed cameras. I was on there a while back and it was empty and all the speeds were set to 40. I did about 60 and never got anything.

How about taking a long time to change lanes, so you are straddled across two lanes for a long time :)
