S3 four year old ownership report

Post by david7m » Fri Jan 19, 2007 6:15 pm

Hello

The S3 section is always quiet, so I thought I would post a report now I have had the car four years....the longest time I have owned the same car, speaks for itself really!

A list of things/problems/costs etc...in no particular order ;)

* Got the car Jan 2003, when I was 22, the car with 19k miles, a 2001 model, 210 bhp, £19,000
* Exhaust back box and centre under warranty
* Front door speakers under warranty
* Coil packs X 4 under warranty
* Traction control sensor under warranty
* Coil pack December 2006, £40 fitted
* Two variable services (was serviced at 19k when collected)
* Front pads X 2, £200
* Front discs, £100
* Rear pads, £50
* APR chip, variable programmes on cruise control, 210/257/270 bhp, £690
* 2 litres of oil
* Clutch master cyclinder under warranty
* 8 X F1's, £800 (new tyres fitted collected)
* Jetex panel filter, £40
* Front n/s CV, £150
* Tracking X 3, £250 (got ripped at the first two places, Audi sorted in the end)
* Divertor Valve, £20
* Airflow Meter, £90
* 2 X sets of Denso Iridium plugs, £100

All prices approx., prob missed some stuff, but not a lot has gone wrong really.

I'd like to think its still worth atleast £11k (now on 64k miles), if so, to lose £8k in value in four years sounds good to me :) Can't think what else to get without adding a load of money to it (M3 would be nice though ;) ). I know for a fact that i won't be having a new model S3 .......

Here is the car when I first got it in 2003 ....

The car still drives perfect, looks mint when clean (not this time of year i'm affraid!) and not many things on the road you can't nip around or give a little squirt to get yourself out of trouble ;)

Good write up Dave, very nearly bought an S3 in 2002 but ended up with a TT. Very nice car indeed, I walked past one today and couldn't resist having a good look around, hopefully the owner did'nt see me thinking I was doing something suspicious.

Wow, a hundred quid for a set of front discs, sooooo jealous!

Can't remember the prices of everything, just a guess! A friend is an ADT and does my work, gets the parts discounted too ;)

If he can get RS6 discs cheap, then I'll take five sets :lol:

I bet that leather still looks the same condition... I've bought some liquid leather but its too damn cold to use at the mo.

Forgot to add to the original report, I have not reset the trip computer since December, and have covered in excess of 2,700 miles at an average speed of 30mph and 27.7mpg!!!!! Not bad eh? Unfortunately, the S3 only has one 'stage' on the mph and mpg DIS, which is cumulative, not per trip (unless you keep resetting!) ......

Clutch Master Cylinder - mine went too - 2 days after I bought the thing, which not two days prior had been inspected and approved by audi.

Fixed under warranty as well, they replaced the clutch too I believe.

I wonder how common this problem is on these cars - ahh well as long as its good for another 100k Im happy.

It took em a while to do though - I wouldnt want to have to fork out for it.

I'll be doing a 6 year report soon as I missed 2008 because of job issues/busy ;) Can't believe how time has flown! Shouldn't take long to update the report, because nothing has really gone wrong!

my girlfriend had a noggy S3 a few years ago, now has an RS4 but thinking of getting another S3 currently on pistonheads

great wee cars so we put 70k miles on it in 2 years but got rid of it when the dam thing started getting expensive:

ie power steering rack had to be replaced @ around 800 quid!!!! it only needed a 50 seal but Audi decided to stop the availability of seals so you HAD to change the whole dam system.

The front drivers side shock spring snapped while sat in the driveway, so replaced front 2
steering decided to pull up a fault code so a replacement sensor was needed

overall we loved it, it had everything except for a self dimming rear view mirror.

hope we get another as its a great car.
