my fuel gauge is bouncing about.and just started not working at all.then it will read all differnt levels.any advise on what ill need.thanxs

Most likely the sensor or some of the wiring.
Do you have Vagcom? You should have a fault code registered, either for the sensor or the gauge.
Hopefully it's not the gauge, as I believe you need to replace the cluster.

Fuel sensor is known to go bad on the S4. Not an easy DIY job I understand.

I replaced my sensor on my B5 and it wasn't that bad. The hardest part was routing the piping so as not to foul the float and of course getting the large ring nut off (and back on).
A little tip, don't smoke whilst doing this job (or even have the interior lights swtched on)...

Doing near to November 5th not a good idea either
