I've got a B6 S4 and have to say that if i had the choice price wise at the time i would have gone for the RS6, there really is no contest what so ever.
Having had the S4 for a year now and just come back from a 1000 mile blast around scotland (only drive it weekends normally) i have to say that the S4 is no slouch and is great fun to drive but you really should go for the RS6, it's THE car to have.

well the green beard party got their own back because I ended up with a tiny hole in the radiator from a stone I suspect.... then Portsmouth Audi screwed me for a replacement rad THEN had the ordacity to say it could have been repaired for 30 quid instead of the 462 quid I ended up shelling out.
So by having the car off the road for a few weeks while said dealer sourced the CORRECT radiator... not ALL S4 's have a V6/V8 which the technican was adamant they did until I opened the bonnet and planted his nose on the cam cover "20v turbo"

if its a V6.... how the hell can it have 20 valves?

SO while out of action this period re compensated environmental warming ice melting tree hugger wannabees wishes!!

Having owned all of the cars discussed I feel I may be able to shed some light here.

You specifically talk about the B6 S4 and C5 RS6 so I'll not go into the B5 range of cars. As for spec, the RS base spec is higher, but you pay your money and take your pick with the toys. Both cars are a plenty in varying levels of spec.

My B6 was noggy with light grey leather interior and looked awesome. I loved that car I really did, it looked good, sounded fantastic, went well enough but somehow did not feel very quick. You would cover ground very fast but it all felt a bit lazy with no urgency. The handling was sufficient for the car in std state of tune. The brakes were powerful enough but you may find continious spirited back road driving a bit of an adventure in the braking zones...It will certinaly feel softer and more sloppy than the S3 IMO. I doubt you would even feel the difference between Stage1 and std.

The RS6....I have only owned this for about 2 weeks but test drove one about 3 years ago. It is an excellent all round car. The performance is breathtaking especially for overtaking etc. The suspension are brakes are its weak point IMO but in fairness it is a bigger car. My car has new DRC and brakes all round but I am comparing it to my B7 RS4!! She has ample room and feels like a big car which is great if you need the space, if you don't, why bother..? I have driven a stage1 RS6 and it is as docile as you want or as mental as you want and arguably plenty performance for all but 0.01% of the population.

In terms of fuel consumption, both are very similiar. The RS6 as Doug says returns between 25-30 depending on driving style and the weight of your right foot. The S4 will be better, 27-33 if driven steady and easy but if you are trying to have fun or mroe often than not, make up time, you need to rev it, so the fuel consumption suffers. Both cars could easily get down into single figures.....

If it were my money (as it was), I need the extra space. The C6 is too overpriced IMO for what it is and looks too ordinary with horrednous fuel consumption. So my options were B7 RS4 Avant or C5 RS6 Avant (or some other marque). The C5 won the battle due to its overall base ability and the extra space. I was happy'ish with the trade off on the suspension braking front.

the 1st ever s4 had a 2.2litre 5-cylinder, and was based on the c4 i.e. the audi 100 - the precursor to the a6. the s2 had the same motor (basically) and was based on the audi 80. i once owned the 20v rs2, similar motor but with a few tweaks from some other german company.

rumours persist that the ttrs will have a 5-cylinder....

Again, some good reviews which is exactly what I am after. Space isnt really an issue (after all, I have a 3dr s3), I just prefer the look of the avant.

I shall still concider and see whats available at time of purchase.

interesting topic this.

I too am thinking seriously about an RS6; the effect the current climate is having on the prices at the moment means I could get a serious bargain. I had discounted taking the plunge 6 months ago as an owner scared me off with the potential cost of DRC replacement and discs. Given the savings available over the price back then, I think I've got a cam belt change and some new brakes 'in the bank'.

Also, a friend has just bought a Mugello Blue RS6 and took me out in it. I think one poster said most people swear as passangers. I did.

So, fuel costs have been discussed in detail, how about other running costs? Specifically:-

(i) when are the 'expensive' services due? Cam belt etc, and what is the average cost
(ii) should I buy one that's had DRC replaced? 'if it aint broke, don't fix it' or more a case of putting off the inevitable?
(iii) Is buying one with a warranty essential?
(iv) what are the known weak points? (early 996 porkers for eg had an engine mount problem that could cost up to £10k to rectify)
(v) Engines good for 100k+ miles?

1.cambelt 40k, just got it done by local indy £868 including thermosat and waterpump (plus front discs and pads) supplied by me £645 from dsgwagon from ebay, main dealer is 850 just for thre belt, abotu 1100 for other parts..
2. Aint broke dont fix, but expect it to go...
3. other than DRC nothing really, mine had a sump gasket go and theres a tiny weep from the rocker cover gasket but nothing to worry about..
4. Theres 150k+ milers still going strong...

mine does hardly any miles so fuel is nto an issue however if i was doign serious miles the mpg would piss me off, on a motoway schlep a tdi is as good a place to be..
