Do you supply your own oil for servicing an RS4?

Post by RSLS » Fri Oct 10, 2008 11:07 am

As title...

I've just tried to do this; but the Service Manager told me some drivel about it invalidating the warranty because it's a high performance car......even though it's exactly the same stuff supplied by them!

Complete bo**ocks on behalf the the SM.

I've never supplied oil before for the RS but will be doing so on the next service, that said I more than likely to take it somewhere other than a main stealer.

I have done so with many other cars and garages with no problems whatsoever.

I did ask my local dealer to fit by 275 F1's - they refused on the basis they were a larger tyre.

I have done it at Camberley, no problem, as long as you supply oil from the preferred oil list, (most of them are on there) it shouldn't be a problem!

I used Fuchs Titan from Opie oils, saved myself £100!

Taunton Audi are currently refusing to honour my reasonable request to use the oil I've offered to supply - Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30, which meets the VW504.00 specification required for the RS4 (and most new Audi Cars).

The most annoying thing is that 2 members of the 'Service Team' had already told me it would be acceptable; but this has now been over-ruled by their Manager! His supporting 'excuse' was that Audi Warranty need to see the Oil Code on the Sales invoice......I told the Service Adviser that there were enough free text fields on the document for them to type-in the details themselves or invoice the 'correct' oil at zero cost.

She's gone away to have a think about it!

No problem at Mayfair either, and another vote for Titan and Opie oils...

I must admit I would have liked to have used Fuchs Titan GT1, but I bought Mobil 1 to keep the dealer happy......which seems to have been a waste of time!

Obviously, I always buy Car Lubricants from Guy at Opie Oils.

Highland Audi in Inverness were happy to let me supply oil as long as it was in unopened containers. They also fitted my 275/30 tyres without fuss but did make a note on the invoice print out that it was "non standard fitment" or something to that effect.

Take the car somewhere else mate. It doesn't even have to be serviced at Audi in the first place AFAIK.

Absolute BS.

The car comes from the factory with Titan Fuchs....not that I reckon the dealer knows that.

Opie Oils every time.

I work in the motor industry for a car manufacturer, unfortunately not Audi, and recently had a meeting with some of the major oil suppliers.

I won't bore you with the details of a 3 hour presenatation and analysis of oil performance but Castrol Edge clearly came out on top against Mobil, Shell etc
Titan Fuchs was not included in the study so I can't comment on that but with our high performance, high costs engines I will definitely use Castrol Edge regardless of cost.

The 4.2 FSI engine in the B7 creates some unique problems for its oil which you will observe if you read this thread in its entireity.

Personally, I don't think you can arrive at conclusions about how an oil will perform in this application from how it performs in other applications.

Put another way, I'd rather believe an owners own analysis, who has no vested interest either way, than an oil company's propaganda.

It is off the back of this thread that I figured I'd change my oil alot more regularly than advertised in this car.

I never got round to getting my oil analysed last time it came out of the car but I will this time.

Hi,

This is nonsense. I have always supplied my own Castrol Edge for Oil changes done every 5,000 miles on my baby by Listers and never had any problem. Like others I buy from Opie and save a considerable amount on each oil change as a result. I would suggest that the service manager at your dealer is simply trying to screw some more money out of you for the service. I would simply tell them that if they do not change their attitude to this you will be taking all of your future business eleswhere. In fact given their behaviour I would already be thinking hard about doing that anyway.

Regards

Exeter Audi wanted £420 for a 2nd service inc pollen filter and Brake fluid change. Also included in that was £140 for Castrol 5w - 30 oil and I asked if I could supply my own Castrol Edge 0w - 30 because it was cheaper and they were more than happy to do that.
Does £420 seem a reasonable price for the service inc oil and brake fluid ?
