Maximum Number of Phone Contacts??

Post by W8PMC » Mon Oct 06, 2008 8:32 am

As per title, does anyone know the definative maximum number of phone contacts the original Audi BT Module (RNS-E) can handle within the phonebook??.

Also is the maximum relative to contacts ar actual numbers that can be stored? i.e. one contact could have 3 seperate numbers displayed for say home, mobile & work, so does that count as 3 towards the limit or 1 (if you know what i mean).

Just want to make sure i'm not reducing my contact list be too much as i know the system can't pull in my current 500+ as it appears to stop at around N, but does for some reason display a V & a Y??

TIA

Hi Paul

the amount of contacts the RSNE can handle is 500 only if you have multiple numbers is should flick between these when the original number is displayed on the screen hope this helps

Rob, cheers for that but are you sure it's quite that many? Is it possible the newer BT Module can handle the number you say but the older BT Module is more limited?

I had roughly 540 Contacts in my mobile (stored on the phone memory not on the SIM card) & it was displaying less than 1/2 of these in the RNS-E phonebook.

Once i reduced my phonebook down to about 200 Contacts i recall counting either 250 or 251 numbers on the RNS-E display last week, so assumed 200 contacts or 250 actual numbers was the limit.

If it is 500 contacts & unlimited actual numbers then i can't see a reason why less than 1/2 were displayed before i culled my mobile phonebook from 540 contacts to 200ish.

Just checked a service book definateley 500 contacts can be downloaded these do all have to be save on the sim and not on the phone memory if some characters are too long it will not display these i think the limit it 20 characters per contact, the new modules from 2008 can hold upto 1000 contacts im unsure if we can increase the limit on earlier models, hope this helps Rob

Rob, thanks again & this does throw up some interesting points. I have no contacts saved on my SIM card so do you know what the maximum contacts allowed from the Phone Memory is, as that's my prefered source to store contacts.

The SIM card has an even lower character maximum so always annoyed me as you can't store full names.

In my current modes the different numbers per individual contact are simplified to M/H/W for Mobile, Home or Work with a / infront. So for say me it's Paul Clarkson/M for mobile etc.

I guess depending on the above i could sync most of my contacts (500) back to my phone & copy to the SIM (is this 500 a Contact or number limit? as 500 contacts would probably be say 580 actual telephone numbers).

Would then have to work out how Windows Mobile Device Center / MS Outlook 2007 handle the syncing of SIM card contacts, as my phone is a Samsung Omnia, so a Windows Mobile Device.

well according to the manual and chats ive had you can only download 50 contacts from your phone memory and the rest will have to come from the sim,i would assume as long as the additional numbers for a single contact are within that contact ,they should then be downloaded ,havent tried this myself yet so please let me know ,i am suprised your phone even pairs up and gets full functionality! Many thanks Rob

So was i, as my Nokia N95 never did more than pair so i was very surprised that the Omnia offers up full functionality.

Still a bit confused then how i'm managing to see around 200 contacts, with about 250 actual numbers when i'm only using the phones memory.

I'll re-sync later & bring across more contacts (say 480), copy these to the SIM card & then see what happens next time the phone syncs with the car.

Also just notoced that according to the Phonebook Info on my Omnia, the max contacts allowed on the SIM card is 250 so surely this limit being on a SIM is not device specific as it's a regular Voda contract SIM i have in the Omnia. No limit is shown for Phone.

I always thought the "50" limit was the amount of voice tags that the phone module could have.

For what it's worth I have an '06 car with factory BT, an iPhone 3G, and i seem to have 100% of contacts transferred from the 'phone to the car.

I've 310 contacts, and many with 3 separate numbers, so i must have ca. 500 numbers transferred. Missed calls etc etc also transfers correctly.

Nice one rjkflyer.

As i can't find a definative answer i'll have to trail & error until the maximum is known for sure. I've uploaded 50 extra contacts to my phone so it now has 250 which is probably 300ish actual numbers, so i'll see if they all sync up to the Car later & then keep adding another 20 until i find a limit.

My guess is it's about 300 contacts MAX as with 500 i was way short on what could be handled/displayed.

As for the SIM card i don't see how this is better, as my SIM card can hold a maximum of 250 Contacts. I wonder though if 250 on the phone & a further 250 on the SIM, but have both memories being accessible is the answer to get to 500 contacts on the RNS-E?

HBK - the contacts should transfer automatically IF and only IF you have a fully compatible 'phone. Fully compatible doesn't just mean in terms of the telephone bit working.

See this thread: http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... ic&t=62288

Not that it's exhaustive, but your 'phone does NOT appear to be on the list. I had a Nokia E61i and that would not transfer contacts (although 'phone worked via BT OK). It was to do with some software/firmware missing on the device which permits BT access to the 'phone's directories, not a problem with the car, and was not something that it was/is possible to 'update'.

Nokia N series are amongst the worst regarding compatibility of transferring phone book and call lists. For some of them (but not all) it can be solved by installing the correct version of the Nokia Contact Manager (downloadable from the Nokia website) on your phone.

I've got over 300 contacts on my HTC TyTn II (including work, home & mobile numbers) and they've all transferred successfully to my RNS-E.
