What is the best oil to use in a K04ed S4? Edge 0-30w? also what oil would people recommend for the gear box and differential?

Hi,

I'm digging this one up again. I have spoken to Audi who recommend Castrol 5W30 oil. My car is a standard S4 and just looking for a 5k oil change. It had a major service, belts etc done last year at over £2k.

What oil would you recommend? Will the 5W30 be fine for a standard car? It has done quite a lot of miles, 96,000 now. I've read loads of posts on here and it seems everyone is using a different oil to each other! Plan on dropping it out tomorrow.

Thanks for any help.

Which seems very cheap

the standard oil audi should recommend is synta gold 5w-40 synthetic,if its on longlife then they will spec 5w-30 but thats not for me,change the interval to fixed servicing and then change the oil every 4k then it doesnt get contaminated and stays nice and clean (drain it out and cook your chips in it  )

Agree with above. Synta Gold 5W40 and change every 3 to 4,000 miles.

Well worth it in the long run and the oil stays nice and clean.

I pesonally think that changing synthetic oil every 3-4k is overkill - just because the oil goes black does not mean that it needs changing. Oilman will be the expert here but modern synthetics are designed to last a lot longer. If you are happy changing the oil all the time then thats no problem but i seriously doubt that it makes any difference to the life of the engine/turbos. Ofcourse im talking about normal/fast driving with no track use.

I change mine every ~7K miles, as the car rarely gets stressed as it does most of its miles commuting, but if I was doing track days or using it more aggressively, then I'd change it more often.

I use Castrol Edge Sport 10w/60 although its probably overkill for my needs, you cant have too much protection for these engines.

I hear where you are coming from, however I track my car quite alot, hence the regular changes. Also, for the sake of 35 quid each change I feel it is a no brainer personally.

I contacted opie oils and they recommended that for a 100000 mile S4 with a remap driven 10000 miles per year - mixture of short journeys and a few long ones that I use a 10W/40 synthetic changed about every 10000 miles. So, Synta Gold it is!

Ok, thanks. So, where do I get Synta Gold from? Can't find anything on the internet except discussions on forums.
