so after at steering rack it starting making a racket? Was it more of a zzzzzzz noise with a bit of clonking bubbling etc?

And yes if a timming belt fails your engine is normally scrap, it defo wont start! Unless the noise was the tensioner bearings been shot? i would of guessed that this would of started with noise and got worse over X amout of miles or just failed and slipped the belt with it!

And how the hell does a oil cooler get blocked? Has the car been serviced in the last 200000 miles? Guess that the pipes was seized and they could not be bothered to free them?

If the warranty are picking up the bill, i suppose who cars?

well yes, but it wasn't just the rack - they did the radiator and the oil coller all in the one (4 day!) job...

it was more of mechanical / metal clicking sound - like a bearing going.

The car's been regularly serviced, including having the timing belt changed at 40k (it's now done 49k) so i think you're probably right - pipes were seized... It was only the (female) service supivisor that described them as 'blocked'. :D

I do, when the warranty didn't pay for the oil cooler and it may only have been the mech's heavy handidness or inability...

"drivebelt seized,
Um really! But the car still run?

To get things clear here, what is your bill and the warranty bill?

"Check for noise, traced to drivebelt seized, replaced drivebelt, tensioner and idler roller tested all ok" is all i saw - the detailed bill with prices went to the warranty company...
