Standard Dyno reading

Post by MGR » Sun Aug 31, 2008 3:07 pm

I'm getting my car on the rollers early next month and was wondering what I should be expecting. Its a standard car (I think/hope). I know it says it should be 265 bhp in the spec but how 'good' are the engines at producing this ? Do most S4s produce this or more/less ? Anyone got a graph showing a standard dyno run ? I've done a search but can only find big HP runs.

I'd be expecting to lose about 30% through the drivetrain. This would give a HP of 185 at the wheels it will be interesting to see what it can produce.

It depends how well you car has been maintained.

It only takes a mullered maf sensor or diverter valves, etc to give you performance problems.
It depends what country you live in too. I think the USA version only produces slightly less while the european is more.
I would do a full health check before you go on a dyno to avoid dissapointment.
MRC do it for £50 (if you live in UK of course).
Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves!?!

Standard S4, but not for long.

There is also somewhat large variance across different locations / rolling roads. While I've never had my S4 on a dyno, my previous turbo MX-5 once went on three dynos in one day without alteration betwen sites - the variance was almost 40hp - this on a roughly 240hp output car.

Nice one :thumb: just gives me an idea. I'm not too bothered about the actual size of the number I'm more interested in understanding the power curve of the car and if its actually running as its supposed to. The car feels slower than I had expected, but I think its due to being used to faster stuff. My other car makes 275 bhp at the wheels so it will be an interesting comparison to see how the numbers feel out on the road - when I know what they are.
