Miles to go before empty...

Post by rikrose » Sun Mar 25, 2007 2:53 am

I had a bit of a worry moment tonight. Left a friend's house after midnight. All the petrol stations nearby were either shut, or failed to exist. (Note to self, update list of petrol stations in TomTom).

I was cruising about in 6th at 30mph because the miles until embarrassing call to AA was reading 10 miles. Then it read 5.

While it read 5 miles, I did 8, to the nearest petrol station, and it was open. much relief there. Question is, was I going to run dry 100 yards down the road? How accurate is that?

Oh, and for reference, 385 miles off that tank, mostly on the M4 :)

Did you see the Top Gear where Clarkson drove from London to Edinburgh and back on one tank in an A8? His DIS was reading empty for a few miles, at which point Clarkson suggested that Audi had made an engine which ran on air.
And with you getting 385 miles out of a tank, I suspect your car had the first prototype of that 'air fuelled' engine!! :sekret:

I guess the question to ask here, is the need for petrol just some elaborate hoax devised by OPEC? Has anyone on the forum ever actually run out of petrol in their S4?

I've come pretty close, on a couple occasions. Reading was on 0 but fuel station was 8 miles away and with some funeral precession driving i made it with no problems. I try and avoid it though in case there is some crap in the bottom of tank that might disturbed.

I've had this happen to me a few times on my way down to Winchester on the A34 - DIS reading said '0 miles' and i was still 20 miles from the nearest petrol station - driving in 6th at 60mph got me to the garage though each time, no spluttering or the like .... but probably not a good thing to do in case it damages the fuel pump (i'm sure i read a thread once about possible damage to the fuel pump when driving on vapours)

I have read over on the A4 pond that at 0 it IS 0 and the car cuts out. I have driven a couple miles on 0 in both my S4 and 2.8q and managed to keep going.

Fantastic miles out of a tank... those were the good ol days when I got that *sigh* - now I just have noise oh glorious noise and extra ponies lol - all worth it :P

I think it says 0 to make you go the quickest possible to take some petrol. I don't think it's "not accurate".

The Top Gear test was great, but the problem with diesels, when the car really hasn't got any diesel, it's difficult to make it start again even when the tank is full.

Well, Having been out in mine today I managed to hit 0 miles and probably did about 4 - 5 miles on 0, how ever when I did manage to fill up it still only took about 53 litre's of V-power to completely fill up even using the magic G-spot button to get more in ..................
So I've either got a lot of crud in the tank or the DIS lies.

I seem to recall a thread recently regarding re-calibrating / re-adapting the DIS range reading however I dont have time to find it right now as 'she who thinks she must be obeyed' has escaped the confines of the kitchen and wants me to do some work

I have calibrated my DIS (yes it was inaccurate before I did it), and have driven 20 miles past (0 miles to go). It is not uncommon for me to go a few miles past 0 and when I fill up still have at least a couple of litres left. I am mindful of the sediment issue though and am going to get my fuel filter changed at the next service!

how do you calibrate the DIS? My fuel consumption shows ~16mpg but I don´t believe it´s accurate. The DIS went crazy after remap and even the fuel consumption would/could raise I don´t believe THAT much after a remap.

Well manufacturer's always underestimate the fuel remaining gauge just down to trying to protect stupid drivers ;-)

Audi aren't alone. BMW do it too. My MINI used to say it had 2 miles left I did about 8 miles before it died.

I wouldn't recommend doing it though.
You would probably sucking up the crud from the bottom of the tank and not doing the fuel pump much good. Most use the petrol as a form of lubricant. I think the S4 pump is submerged in the fuel tank at the back.
Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves!?!

Standard S4, but not for long.

I filled up a couple of days ago, Put 54.50L in the tank.

Was 0 kms remaining, for about 10kms.

Cheers
Steve
