Rebuilding/overhauling S4 engine

Post by kn9 » Sun Aug 17, 2008 2:24 pm

Did a quick search and didn't find anything in the forum except for some clever people doing it themselves.

I'm thinking, most B5 S4s has done lots of miles, and if I buy a 100k mile S4 (they're also cheaper) it might be a good idea for an overhaul/rebuild before going down the tuning road.

Some questions:

1. Does anyone know who would do overhauls/rebuilds? Would Unit 20 or MRC do them or have they got their hands full with tuning?
(I'm in the Midlands by the way)

2. Anyone would have a clue on approx. costs ie. how many hours labour?

3. What would be really useful to do while the engine's out (with an eye on costs?) crank? rods? bearings?
Turbos can only be replaced with the engine out right?

Much thanks in advance for putting up with an enthusiastic but utter Audi novice.

Hi there , I've had a few high mileage cars in but they have only needed service work .I've never had one that was "worn out ".

If you were going to rebuild an S4/RS4 engine wouldn't it be wise to build them to 650bhp :D

Not sure what that entails..? Stronger pistons and rods I guess.

the engines are pretty reliable. It is hard to quote on an engine rebuild becasue it all depends on what gets replaced. It only takes one score in the bore and you need a full rebuild with oversized pistons.

Worn out engine? Was that in, like, the 80s? Mine is on 170K+ and uses very little oil an still goes pretty well!
