RNS - D Sat Nav is Dead...
Hi there every one...
I have a problem with my sat nav in my 1999 S4... When you try and switch it on nothing happens... No display!!
I load the disc into the carrier in the boot and it loads the disc but when i try and switch it on using the control unit at the right hand side of the hand brake... nothing happens...
I removed the control unit and tested the 4 wires that go into the unit to see if there was power getting to it... I checked the 4 wires that goes into it and found 4.7 volts on 2 of the wires... 1 has nothing and 1 is the earth...
I have disconnected the unit in the boot to see if it reset itself but that didnt work either...
Now am stuck what to do next...
Any help would be appreciated... I am a member of a similar forum but as far no help from them...
Many thanks...
Andy

RE: RNS - D Sat Nav is Dead...
That 4.7 volts doesn't sound right to me
Assuming it's got ISO connections, there should be the black one which is the power connector
Should be a red/white wire on that, which IIRC is permanent, so thus should be around 12v. If not then it maybe switched live, in which case again should show 12v when ign. turned on
Brown wire should be earth. Can't remember the other power wire colour off the top of my head, but could be a solid red one.
Check those first, if any discrepenices, then check the fuses first.

The colors of the wires are
Green - 4.7v
Grey - 4.7v
clear - 0v
Yellow - 0v
The readings are the same if the ignition is on or off... No change in the voltage...
I have checked all of the fuses to the right hand side of the dash board but all are fine... Non broken... There isnt a specific one for the sat nav... there are 2 maybe 3 that are showing in the instruction manual...
I also checked the unit in the boot and the fuse is good there too...
Thanks for your fast responce

Those colours do not sound right to me at all
Like I said when you remove the unit you should see, 2 block connectors, which normall are brown (speakers), and power (black) housings. Both are 8 pin/wire connectors
You need to check the wires on the black connector. There should definitely be a red/white wire, as this is common on VAG cars.

RE: RNS - D Sat Nav is Dead...
I think i have the wrong model number for the sat nav i have...
Here are the numbers that are on the base unit that takes the disc...
Blaupunkt - werke gmbh
7612001275
z1z1w0852707
Then it has...
NAV
4d0919887 D
Made in germany
It has a big D printed on it as well
The control unit is small and rectangle in shape and sits to the right hand side of the hand brake... and the display comes up on the information display in between the rev and speedo counters..
Thanks
Andy

That's not an RNS-D that's a BNS.
The RNS-D has a "proper" display in the dash and replaces the radio.
The actual sat nav unit is behind the left hand trim in the boot.

Thanks for the reply PetrolDave... Much appreciated...
So now i know which one i have does any one know of any problems these units have... Mine isnt getting any supply voltage to the control unit beside the hand brake so it wont even start up...
I have checked the fuses and all are good... Does the supply then go to any relays before it goes back to the controller...

The control panel beside the handbrake is connected to the actual control unit in the boot, and is fed by nominal 5V so 4.7V is fine (within 10% tolerance).
The problem isn't there - it's at the control unit in the boot!
