ESP/Traction Control Light

Post by HibS4 » Tue Aug 12, 2008 9:12 pm

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced this or can shed any light on it.

In my S4 Avant in the last few days when accelerating quite hard in third gear the light has come on/power cut (feels like a rev limiter) at about 5500rpm. The first time was a wet A43 so thought nothing more of it but both times since have been dry conditions, straight line and slight inclines. Seems really odd as have done quite a bit of accelerating quite hard and everything has been normal!?!

Cheers

I had a similar issue when I had Pirelli P6000s on my car when I first got it. It went away once I got better tyres, but it doesn't sound like you're actually physically losing traction, so most likely an electrical issue.

Need to sort out getting vagcom I reckon. Is it easy enough to use/understand?

I had this problem when I first got my car.

Turned out to be MAF like Blue Thunder suggested.

ABS and Traction Control both rely on MAF for an engine load signal.

Vagcom is a piece of piss to use. Although the freeware version is limited (can't do full fault code checks/clear codes, cannot read certain control modules, etc) so i would buy the licence if you have the money. £50 i think

I bought a diagnostic cable off e-bay for £8. Go well together.

Once you've checked the MAF sensor. Should be around 214-220 I think if your car is stock.
You should see a fault code such as engine running lean on banks 1&2 or a direct fault code suggested at maf.

Get it replaced from audi. 2 year garantee.
Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves!?!

Standard S4, but not for long.

Thanks BB

Will download Vagcom and get a cable off eBay and see what comes up. With TC switched off the car has been absolutely fine.

Right then, ended up buying a genuine Vagcom lead yesterday which was delivered today!

Following came up, which I cleared and went for a blat and it came back the same

Address 01: Engine Labels: 078-907-551-AZA.lbl
Part No: 8D0 907 551 D
Component: 2.7l V6/5VT 0002
Coding: 05711
Shop #: WSC 06325

1 Fault Found:
17862 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 1 (G235): Short to Ground
P1454 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000

Is there more than one EGT? Had one replaced when at MRC for health check, will call them in the morning and see what they suggest

Yes, there are two EGT's, one for each exhaust manifold.

Guess you don't know which one was replaced. Can't remember if Bank 1 is the more difficult of the two to get or not. Do a search on here for that error code and you should find some answers.

MRC should sort you out. Unlike the stealerships they tend to have most parts in stock (speaking from experience with them). So you should be in and out within an hour with a good as new s4. ;-)

Wise words spoken by so many, yes it was the MAF seemingly on the way out.

Took Doug up the hill a couple of times! and couldn't recreate the hesitation at all, why was that not surprising. No fault codes came up after me clearing them the other night, also played with the acceleration tool on VAGCOM but that is for a different post ;). The MAF readings were topping out at 244 which DOug said should be higher than that so he put on a new MAF and we went back out and got a peak MAF reading of 255. Must admit that previous to the visit to the holy one today the problem hadn't come up as much since I re-cleared the codes. Makes me wonderif I had cleared it properly before and if not then it might just have been one of those random things, still got the MAF changed sooner rather than later which must be a good thing.

Thanks to all you guys for your suggestions etc.. :D
