Who's running 550+

Post by 911tt » Wed Jul 30, 2008 11:44 am

Just wanted to hear from anyone who's running R(S4)'s with 550+ , pref RS6 turbos..

Is it a complete animal that will bite your nuts off , or are they civilised until you start to crack on?

I'll be going with the above spec very soon and was wondering how far to go!

Local m8 (kies4) got a heavy powered s4 (420's.) ... hahaha, only kidding, close to 500's. Its one reason I'm asking as his clutch (stg1) doesn't suffer fools, although power delivery is smooth and hard...

Jimbo, come on, tell us what's going in :)

With 600-700bhp these cars are tame. and drive such like.
You just need to keep them well maintained.
If it takes off too fast the wheels will spin so no worries about going too fast to quickly.
THERE IS NO DRAWBACK TO MORE POWER/ Driveability.

911TT, you may need to consider upgrading quite a few other bits along the way if you're aiming for 550+bhp i.e. clutch, brakes, suspension, injectors, IC's, manifolds, downpipes, exhaust.

Nige,

Yes, I have all that on the list, most is taken care of, just deciding now on d/pipes and whether to go SMIC (ERIC) or FMIC (JHM) and whether its worth hybrid'ing the turbos...

I'm running 592 bhp with that spec. Just got my car back fomr MRC a week or so ago. They are very tame til you get to 3000 rpm when the turbos really start to hit boost. Full boost (2 bar) is not until near 4k so it's a lot different than the std set up (it was running 470 bhp before that and you get a proper torque kick in the back at 2500 rpm).

However, when you get full boost it is unbelievably quick. Way quicker than my 400 bhp tuscan and about the same as my 500 bhp cosworth (but with more usable power as the turbos start to spool at 2500 rpm whereas the cossie gives you absolutely nothing til 4k).

The only thing that takes some getting used to is the lightweight flywheel (the engine spins up so much quicker) and the heavy duty clutch (which snatches a bit) so the first few take aways from the lights are a little embarrassing!.

Otherwise, yes it is a lot of money but what a sleeper!!!

I have over 550bhp - but not the Rs6 turbos as I feel they take too long to spool up, so I have the K04 hybrids, which IMHO work better.

It really depends on if you want top end grunt or more low down punch - but mine pulls like a train all the way up in 6th, and is so quick through the gears - it's all down to personal choice.

Good luck with it all - still not convinced it's all worth the expence...but thats another story.

I is running 509bhp, what's the next stage from this, what sort of mods will I need for 550-600?
Have sportscats, full system, manifolds, hybrid turbo's, water injection and have had full engine rebuild in preparation for the additional power.
Flywheel and stupid clutch is done too, along with usual brakes, suspension etc................

I'm no expert, but I think you'll def. need to get either Bigger SMIC or a FMIC and some larger injectors, I think hybrid K04's are good for up to 550, then its either RS6 turbos or nutter GTs :)

Oh of course, 'another' remap ;-)

It all depends on what sort of hybrids they are. We do not advise using K04 hybrids for high speed and abusive track usage, as the top end gets restricted by the hot side housings, leading to high oil temperatures and EGTs. RS6 turbos are much better suited for this type of use, due to their larger hot sides.

AFAIK the turbo's are Hybrid K04's with 360 bearings, cutback turbine blades and larger comp wheels. I have done loads of track days, Nurburgrings and high speed runs, and TBH never had ANY overheating or similar issues with it, I guess the water injection keeps the ACT's really low.
