3 new faults in one trip!!!!! Help!

Folks

Drove my car away from work on Friday after some really heavy rain.

1. Looked down and noticed my Speedo wasn't working (nor mileage recorder) I turned on and off ingnition to no avail.

2. Looked down again some 4 miles on and Engine/ECU warning light comes on. Whilst not that noticable at normal speeds, the car wont rev that much past 6k and starts to splutter.

3. Whilst taking the car up through the revs, the fuel gauge starts to wander from the 3/4 to 1/4, but settles down when revs are low and steady. seems to fluctuate with the higher rpm range.

All other instuments (speedo excluded) are working normally.


Have run Vag-com:-

2 Faults found

17521 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor; B1 S1 : Internal Resistance too high
P1113 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

16885 Vehicle Speed Sensor: Implausile Signal
P0501 - 35-00 - -
Readiness: 0000 0000


Any advice (do I need to buy 2 new Lambda Sensors - Where?)

Is the speed sensor the one beside the drive shaft?

Fuel Gauge?

I would say you definitley need a lambda sensor. Both the front sensors are the same part no., but you need to change the on the RHS...O/S of the car.

As for the other fault, it will probably be the speed sensor that is causing your speedo and odo n/w problems. Don't know where it's located, but you could be right in your guess

Edited to say, that the lambda sensor fault will cause none of the issues/problems you comment on. If you erase it, it will erase, and re-appear after a few days.

Are you saying I only need One lambda sensor?

Are you saying that this is not causing the high rpm splutter? If, so why no other fault codes

Mine had this fault re-occuring everytime I reset it, and it definitley wasn't stopping me going past 6k rpm. Could be a MAF?

Yes you only need one lambda sensor from your test results on VAG-COM

I wonder if the speed sensor (aka distance sensor) is causing the reduced rev range?
Norrs2, have you had a clutch of late as this part seems to be on the gear box - I'd def check wiring before buying the part, ETKA pic attached;

Yes, you are correct! The Clutch was replaced about 6 weeks ago, but what could be the problem with the wiring?

I'm not familiar with this bit of the car but I suspect when the gearbox was removed either the wiring to the sensor has been damaged or the plug hasn't been attached securely and water is getting in causing a short - it looks like an area that'll get very wet in heavy rain.

How can you tell what side and only one? What aspect of the fault code determined this?

b1 s1 = front + drivers side (bank 1 side 1)
Mine and r33's were B1 s2

Bank 1 - Is that before the Cat?

Yes, you can reach the sensor via the engine bay rather than underneath

Bank one (B1) means the RHS/OS of the engine

And the sensor one (S1), means the lambda before the catalyst

The speed senser is definately at fault, check that the orange seal is intact inside the multiplug which attaches to the senser if this is missing that is why you have water ingress, the reason your fuel gauge and other things are playing around is because one of the earths for the insrument cluster goes through the senser, so if the senser is disconnected this fault happens, hope this helps, once you have fixed it erase all faults and roadtest i.t should be fine

Top advice Rog, and a cheap fix too - you should charge for that sort of thing!
