My mate's dad is a Director at Audi AG in ingolstat. Could ask about RS8 prospects but I don't think he would spill the beans to have it plastered all over a web-discussion forum, unfortunately. I have had some insiders in the past such as knowing about the V6 TT about 12 months before it was speculated in the forums/press.
In recent years Audi has bought out the S version of their cars, and then the RS versions literally before ending production and stepping up to facelifts or new models. Look at the Audi 80 to S2 to RS2 timelines and the A4 chassis that spawned the S4 and culminated in the RS4 just before the completely new model came out. Not sure we will see an RS3 but there is definately a new A3 very close (common platform with Golf MK5). I would expect an S8 probably within the year but I don't think the RS8 is as close as some hope .
As a car manufacturer it is completely bad business to spend money developing a car that is going to snatch sales from your existing model base yet you want to entice buyers even though they might know that a replacement model is imminent.
