Brake pads

Post by Bushy » Wed Jan 29, 2003 6:35 am

Right following our discussions on Movit/Brembo/Porshe calipers I thought I would start another discussion on brake pads

My initial comments are as follows and relate to my experience with my RS4

Stock pads/stock rotors - Ok for a stock set up, no real comments accept didnt really cut the mustard, you can get fade in road driving, an on the track it was almost dangerous

Quattro GMBH cross drilled rotors with Pagid yellows, incredible difference to stock, stopped much quicker. The down side IMHO. Well the paggid yellows are a good pad offering high levels of friction to slow it down but the drawbacks are producing more heat and the increased friction pays its toll on the rotor. After only 8000 miles the discs had signs of cracking on nearly all holes and the efficientcy was none existant as the heat in the pad material had started causing break down of the pad

Porshe/Movit/Brembo, well the ultimate solution. However the pad material has been experimented with by various people. So not sure why but mine seems to be only available with the Brembo fast road pads. They work well, lasted around 14k miles although started complaining noise wise a bit from high speed heavy braking. The surface seemed slightly cracked when taken out

Ok other pad options for the movit are paggid yellows, i personally feel that this will have the same detrimental effect as on the GMBH set up where it will destroy the rotor, and in fact i think this is what John Roberts has experienced. the other option is a softer porshe pad which may not feel as though it stops as well but is more cost efective in terms of its price and it wont upset the disc

I hear that porshe drivers expect to change the pads after one track day but if they are only £100 instead of nearly £200 it isnt that bad, and the effect on the rotor is less

So who uses what and who is going to put my opinions straight?

I've used Pagid pads in my (ex) Porsche and found them very good, lasting 3-4 track days. My S4 runs HiSpec brakes with Ferodo DS2500 which are good (cheap) road pad and are what I used in my Impreza (and what Prodrive use as their 'Upgrade' pad).

The difference between my Audi S4 & Porsche Set-ups and yours is that I don't run cross-drilled rotors. I'm told (!) that the only way to go is slotted only as cross-drilled will always crack. Now this may be cross-drilled that are drilled not cast so your Movit rotors should be OK as they are probable cast. I wonder if this is down to stresses in the rotor due to casting process, maybe.

Anyway I've always used slotted discs without a problem.

Personally... i wouldnt go down the Padgid yellow route... no denying that there really good, but thhey have destroyed my Movit Discs They dont disperse the heat as well... and i am now using the Porsche ones... OK they dont last as long ...but there again they dont kill your discs...so its cheaper in the long run to keep changing the pads than getting new discs fitted every 6 months.

I've had Pagid Yellows on mine for 20k miles now, superb stopping and no squealing at all. The key to good pad life is maintenance. Before each trackday take them off and give them a good scrub and clean, which takes off the layer of heat affected material. This is the important bit as otherwise the heat reflects back off the pad (which needs to absorb some of this) because of this layer of damaged material, and has nowhere to go apart from onto the disc or away into fresh air. This in time, with no maintenance, will damage your disc - mine have done 20k miles and no cracks or damage whatsoever.

Also, if you can, get the split pads as they dissipate the heat better and dont absorb as much.

Andy do you think the 19" rims help

I guess they must let more heat dissapate to atmosphere than the stock rims?

The 19's may indeed help, althought the key thing here is maintenance - do not expect brake calipers/discs or pads of this type of performance, taking this sort of punishment, to last, problem free for 6k miles or more, without maintenance of the pad and cleaning of the calipers and discs at least every 2k. This way you have the best of both worlds - but needs a bit more tlc

Over the last two months I have serviced by brakes three times, and washed it twice - I am a slob
