Gearbox/clutch

Post by PHIL_SELF_2 » Fri Oct 10, 2003 3:40 pm

Do all RS2 drivers have to push the clutch pedal through the bulkhead to get into gear? In particular reverse is very difficult & first is almost as bad, after that it's a bit easier. It seems to have been worse in the hot weather & as I've only owned the car since July hot weather is what we've had most of. This makes gearchanging a chore & progress is best described as stately, not brisk. I've checked the clutch pedal travel - it bites about 25 mm off the bulkhead & it's not slipping as I've done a stall test using the footbrake, not the handbrake. I think it may be clutch drag. One suggestion is to replace the hydraulic fluid totally & make sure that there is no air in the system, but I haven't tried this yet. Are there any other adjustments please?

Regards

Do all RS2 drivers have to push the clutch pedal through the bulkhead to get into gear? No the clutch should be fairly easy and you should'nt have to push it through the bulkhead.

In particular reverse is very difficult & first is almost as bad, after that it's a bit easier. No the only change that sometimes causes problems on the RS2 gearbox is the first to second gear. Weak syncho on 2nd I believe It seems to have been worse in the hot weather & as I've only owned the car since July hot weather is what we've had most of. This makes gearchanging a chore & progress is best described as stately, not brisk. I've checked the clutch pedal travel - it bites about 25 mm off
This sounds way to close to the bulkhead - mine bites at a much bigger distance away from the bulkhead probably just under half the way out from the bulkhead the bulkhead & it's not slipping as I've done a stall test using the footbrake, not the handbrake. I think it may be clutch drag. One suggestion is to replace the hydraulic fluid totally & make sure that there is no air in the system, but I haven't tried this yet. My s2 had the exact same problem as you describe.
The rod on the clutch master cylinder bent.
The clutch got harder and harder then the rod broke.

phil this should be ok as i replaced the master cylinder and in doing so replaced fluid, but it is easy to check by removing the undershield by the pedals.

Mine is only ever hard to get in to (1st) gear when its really hot - e.g. in stop start motorway traffic. Then I have to resort to putting it in 2nd then first to get away.

In normal motoring its fine, though you could never call it a brisk change.

Stock is good, if not worn. Will take more than 600 Nm.
