Too much air

Post by MikeD » Fri Jul 04, 2008 4:41 pm

Just wondering if anyone else is finding the same......

At good speeds ( as in at about 3 O'clock ish on the dial) the front of the car starts to get light and as you overtake a slower car the front can be all too eager to change direction. Could always lower the front a bit , but would rather not lose the warrenty , as it was a new car in feb.

I was wondering if anyone on here would make a front splitter for the B7, as in take Robs idea of the scoop for the oil cooler and extend it all the way fround the front. It would need to be in 3 bits and would need to stick at least 2 inches out from the lower edge of the front bumper. Would help oil cooling and help hold the front on the ground a little better at interesting speeds ( always on the German motorways , of course)

I find teh car is not well planted at speeds above 120mph, Like the first time i tested a M3 it drifted up to 145mph with out sway, but the B7 does seem to be a bit unstable.....does the SS+ overcome this?

I haven't noticed any instability at up to the limiter. Previous car was an E46 M3 and same. Hope this isn't another manifestation of DRC leakage...?

I have SS+ and would like it to be a little more planted, but that said I do drive it the way is was designed to be (may not have been built that way, but) have just got the warning come up for front pads , cant wait to see how much a set of pads for the ceramic brakes are..... not.

Tartan Rob you out there , would love your input for the front splitter.

Guys - front splitter yes. That is an option. However even with just the oil cooler scoop I find the front a little more sorted at speed.

Perhaps it would be worth getting a scoop onto someone's car who gets the instability feeling and see how she goes...?

In all honesty, i think it is brilliant at high speeds. Ive just come back from a week long trip around Europe (which included the Nurburgring) and from Monte Carlo to Geneve we were sitting at rediculous speeds the whole way, to quote the passenger ''its like being on a scalextric''.

Yes I agree but when you have the wheel in your hands you can feel that it gets a little lighter than I would like at speeds of 3 Oclock and above when you overtake, on an empty road I am with you spot on,
@ Tartan Rob, as a sufferer of oil temps up to 132ºC and looking for a little less air under the front I would love to test the scoop , but I am not just round the corner from you. Let me have your thoughts.

Mike - I am in the process of manufacturing a second part to the scoop today that will scoop air in from all 4 sides. Once I've made this and got it on the car and tested it (this week/next), I'll be i a position to sell. Probably via VAG parts. The current scoop is great over 100, below the force of air is not enough to give a significant reduction in temps. Having said that, they are still lower than std and of course the scoop looks fantastic.

This little addition should make if effective at normal motorway speeds and superb at higher speeds even in hot countries.

As another RS4 owner who has sat at 185mph for many miles on German Autobahns, I have to say that my car is very planted. Not noticed any lightness at all. I have SS+ too.
