Alastair, I'll contact Audi tomorrow (Thursday) about the half a tooth thing.
It's a converstaion I'm looking forward to... "You may know this but the RS2 water pump is smaller than the S2 water pump so the belt won't line up exactly with the marks or the teeth so you have to <beep> it by half a tooth."
When they've carried me away kicking and screaming, you will come and visit, won't you?
Now what? No power and drinking fuel - intermittently.
The main issue seems to be that audi technicians cannot resist lining up the timing marks as on the other models. As you will have read the marks do not line up on an RS2 ! Do not worry re the water pump unless they cannot get the timing belt correct. Its got a smaller sprocket so it runs faster than the S2

To my surprise, my phone call to Audi was well received. I just imagined that owners ringing up with advice on car maintenance is high on their list of irritations.
With hindsight I guess I should have taken it to one of the specialists rather than to Audi, but it was on a low loader and had to go somewhere. No, it was worse than that. My daughter was having an emergency cesarian, I lost my phone and our only four seater car was on a low loader and had to go somewhere. I spent the weekend ferrying hysterical women all over Berkshire one at a time. Just call me Mr Popular.
Rather irrationally I drew comfort from hearing from Audi that Sid is looking after it. Sid sounds older and more contemplative. Anyway, I'll find out tomorrow!

Phone call from cheerful Sevice Manager at Audi a bit before nine this morning. He told me the car is ready and after prompting added that it goes like stink.

After the diagnosis revealed both crank and camshaft sensors were showing faults and as it was about due a cambelt anyway, I asked for a top jolly job with both sensors, a new cambelt and cambelt cover (it was broken at the top) and all the sundries.
£840. Ching, ching!

It wasn't £840 with Audi, it was £880.40. Wishful thinking, I guess.
The way this started was inconsistent running; sometimes the car ran well and sometimes it didn't.
The car now runs very well, very smoothly and is very consistent, but it isn't the box of fireworks it was. One doesn't wish to complain or anything but the power is now coming in at 4500 instead of 3500. Don't get me wrong, stuff still gets very small in the mirror very quickly but I think that when it used to be good, it was better than it is now.
Is this the point I let MRC have it?

Don't know if Horsham is conveniet but I've had most of my stuff done there at White Cottage Quattros, he works on his own so its not quick but he is very thorough IMHO.

Funny thing, but the more I drive it the more I wonder if this is how it should be. This despite all I've said in the past about the turbo coming in with such a bang and how good it feels. It's just so smooth now and has loads more torque low down. I know the turbo is working fine because I can hear the wastegate being busy with all but changing up at really low revs.
It's more like a very fast car now and less like a fun fair ride. Which is why I was disappointed when I got it back.
I guess I'll take it and ask the man!
Or we could go to Santa Pod for a Run What You Brung up the quarter mile. Now there's an idea. Then we'd know for sure.

Now don't be cross, but I put a new tank of fuel in and it's going like a rocket.
While I'm not suggesting that the fuel was the only culprit, a dodgy tank of V-Power bought during the tanker drivers' strike to coincide with the car's own crisis certainly wouldn't have helped.
It is also booked into MRC for a health check. MRC were closest by quite some margin.
