Rear Discs - technical know how required

Post by DickyC » Tue May 27, 2008 5:02 pm

Does anyone know much can you skim off rear discs and stay in spec?

Pretech (brake specialists in Reading) can do the skimming to the required standard but need to know what the minimum thickness is.

The car had new rear discs last year, and I thought the old ones skimmed up would be nice for my - or the next owners's - bottom drawer.

Expensive refurb work or a visit to VagParts - discuss.

Thanks,

Ah, yes. That would have helped.

The discs are not warped . They are mostly just worn and could do with a face up but also there is some surface corrosion, on the inside faces of both discs oddly. Enough to fail the MoT but looking as if there is sufficient left to allow a skim. The brake people just need to know how much they can skim off and stay in spec.

I would replace I am afraid. If just surface corrosion with decent pads just go out on a hard drive with lots of hard braking. The RS2 has a degree of rear brake bias unlike the S2 and you will clean them.
To answer your question wear limit 22mm rear disc (24mm new). Source the RS2 workshop mannual. PM me your e mail addy & happy to send you a copy

Thanks, Alastair. Just a mil off either side won't do it, they're too far gone.

But hey, it was worth an investigation.

Thanks. The standard ones from Audi are currently £272.68 including VAT for the rear and £127 for the fronts. The storeman said he thought they had come down in price.

He said in the early days of the RS2 they supplied a full set of brakes for about £3,500 for Maranello at the bottom of Egham Hill who had Derek Warwick's old one as a runaround. According to him they mashed it.

I'll get on to Vagparts and see what they say. The last time I spoke to them they said the big brakes were working out less at the moment. So for a full set an upgrade is cheaper.

Part #'s for the big brake setup plz
i'm trying to check up with porsche parts department but they telling me different part #'s and different prices??
i took a couple of measurments of the rear discs for example and it seems to be very similar to a std 911(996) c4s rear disc which is alot cheaper and drilled? (any thoughts)
Also from what i see the brakes seem to come exactly off a '95 928 which if you check those prices it seems to be about ZAR 12,000 for discs front and rear which is quite alot of money, so surely you must be able to upgrade without breaking the bank??

Can anyone confirm if these are a direct fit for the standard RS2 rear discs please?

Porsche 928/944T rear rotor (951 352 041 01)

Both 928 and RS2 discs seem to share:
299 x 24 disc size
5 x 130 bolt spacing
71mm height from the back of the disc to the wheel mounting surface
180mm inner diameter inside the "hat"

I can get these for £130 each inc VAT which is a darn sight cheaper than Audis discs. I know they are non floating discs but this hasn't been a problem on the fronts since they were swapped over.

I can't say if they do fit. I know for a fact that 951-352-041-91 DOES NOT fit as I bought and tried them myself. I look forward to finding out!

Last time I looked into this I came away with the impression that you could not get rear discs (maybe 'drilled' only) from porsche due to hat issues.
