Seized gearbox!

Post by NigelJ » Mon Oct 06, 2003 2:52 pm

Had a new gearbox in my RS4 3 weeks ago as Audi couldn't get the replacment synchros for the original. The misses was driving down the fast lane of the A3 near Guildford on Sat evening - v. busy @ about 65MPH- when the car suddenly shook and then rapidly slowed down! Near chaos with all the cars around but she somehow managed to get the car over to the grass verge without actually being hit. She described it as being like someone else was driving the car and was pressing the brakes like hell. Phew! The 2 mile walk in the rain to get help has not further improved her view of the car.

When I got to it on Sunday morning I started it up with the clutch pressed. Engine OK. BUT when I lifted the clutch, with the lever in neutral, the car tried to move forward but it felt like the brakes were on. I think something is wrong!

Its now at HWM Audi who fitted the box - I wounder if they put any oil in it.

Happily this has now been resolved. Audi "found" a replacement box within 24 hours (why the last one took 5 months is questionable) and the car was fixed very promply. Perhaps the mention of lawyers to Customer Care helped!

It turned out that something in the front diff had failed and more or less locked up the NSF wheel which explains why the wife had a rather intersting trip!

Anyway, the car now seems ok and i've just fitted the UUC short shifter I got from rs4steve which is great. I'm just going to get some miles on the box, because until I do the wife won't drive it, and then I'm going to REVO the car. Should be intersting!

PS All the work was under warranty.

I'm so glad I imported an S4 and not an RS4! (warranty - what's that?)
2001 Silver S4 Avant
AmD remap, APR R1 DVs, APR bipipe, Full Miltek exhaust
H&R coilovers, AWE DTS, Porsche front brakes, Short-shifter, 18" RS4 replicas
Defi-HUD boost gauge / turbo-timer (with afterrun pump modification), Phatbox
