That's a very good point. If it were an alignment problem though I would have thought I would have seen at least some uneven tyre wear but with nearly 17,000 miles on the clock all four apear to have worn very evenly - albeit they are about ready for replacement. Pretty sure it's not 'Emperor's new clothes' but it's always possible!Well until we get a clear answer on whether a geo is part of the shock replacement, we won't know if the change in handling characteristics is a result of the shock replacement or of a subsequent geo re-alignment. Or of course, just Emperors New Clothes

So, took mine back two weeks after having all four shocks replaced because the knocking was back on front off-side. Dealer had car for almost two days but couldn't re-create the knocking. I went in, drove one of their team to nearest retail park with speed bumps and, as if by magic, there it is!
They have inspected all of the suspension though and no leaks from shocks or signs of any other problems so they have suggested changing a gearbox mount as they feel this could be the problem. I know these things aren't always easy to nail down but immediately I got the car back after the work before there was no knocking for the first 300 mile or so which suggests to me that something they did made a difference. So I am sceptical that the gearbox mount will make the difference but how should I know.
One thing that hasn't so far recurred though is the tracking/tramlining that I had experienced before.
Anyway, in the absence of any other choice the car will go back next week for a new gearbox mount!

Just had my front shocks replaced and new DRC valve - the car feels much better for it, more planted and better body control. Seems to tramline less too. As far as I know the Geo wasn't done, but the car still drives straight and the steering wheel is centred, so I'd be surprised if it was out at all.

Car went in yesterday for new shocks and clutch pipe.
It must have known it was going in, because on Monday night on the way back from Devon, the Check Engine Light came on whilst on the motorway! Was still on on Tuesday morning on the way to SKF in Stockport, so would be nice to know what has caused that to come on.
Whilst booking in, I asked if a Geo was performed after shocks fitted, and the answer was No........

Shocks now replaced and I'm surprised by the difference to the car it has made.
Yes, the tramlining has definitely gone, but also there is much more feel in the steering and the front end feels keener to turn in and holds its line much better.
However, I never previously heard any knock on rebound that others had noted. But now, I have heard it twice in the last 2 days. It has to be a bloody big lateral ridge or pothole to make it knock, but it is definitely there. Normal rough surfaces are no issue at all, but I don't know why there would now be this knock. Maybe it was there before and I just never hit anything hard enough to cause it (the wife drives this car a lot more than me) but I never heard anything in the 1500 miles I did in it last week, but then this weekend driving to Abergavenny and back on Saturday and around Manchester and Wigan today I've spotted it.
I'll give it a little longer and see if it gets worse or goes away, but the main thing is that new shocks have definitely improves the overall driving experience.
Haven't had a chance to see if I can get the clutch to fault again, and the engine management light came on due to a leaky solenoid valve.

Hey guys, you all jinxed me!!! May be I shouldn't have asked them to check but I did..................and I've got leak from the right front shock!!! Unbelievable, that's 2 cars out of 4 from Aus on this forum also have leaked shocks!
Part is ordered...hopefully it will be sorted out promptly without further trouble. They didn't say anything wrong with the DRC but do you guys think it's a matter of time or will this need to be sorted out when they replace the front shocks.

2007 RS4 B7 - Phantom black saloon
I'm curious because whilst detailing the wheels yesterday, I had all four wheels off and was nosing around the top of the front shocks, and there is some residue on them. Can someone who has had a leaky shock post a picture of the actual shock so that I can compare notes to see if my shocks are leaking....
