I usually get 19-21 but I suspect my car is only getting properly warmed up by the time I hit he town traffic. On long motorway runs I have managed 30. But that was really trying. Quite frankly I wouldn't do that again.

I never thrash my car from cold or when approching the house out of respect for all things mechanical. But my run into town is down hill when the car is cold it's only a 7-8 mile drive but can take 20-30 minutes. Si I figure the car is still running rich on the warm up mode. On going home once I've cleared the traffic I have to climb the hill home. This senario is not the best for good fuel consumption.

I spoke to the new owner of my old S4 on the phone the other day.

He said that he couldn't belive the fuel consumption. I was just about to point out that the car was highly modified with a very high specific output etc etc when he continued "it's far more economical than my old 2.8 A4".
Couldn't believe it but I suppose its how you drive them.

Remember David that I flogged the arse off it at every opportunity and round here there are loads of dual carriageways and very few police cars.

17 MPG average
about 27 taking it easy up to Manchester and back.

Better than my M3 though. I have done 150 miles so far, 60 miles on a long run back from Warwick an the rest very gentle short runs. 20.6 MPG .

Dreading the MPG figure when I start opening her up.

Well I'm the guy to test the validity of that statement

Did you also read that it was the finest 6 cylinder engine ever made

I'd say thats pretty good, not much worse than my standard S4 and much faster.

The new S4 will not match that in standard trim

How come so many of them have blown up then?

Anyway, we all know that BMWs are the best cars in the world, and that people who drive them are gods and that the rest of us should get off their roads and just stand there wishing we could aspire to BMW ownership and the corresponding deification it bestows.

Yes the 4.2 has a raging thirst judging by the figures.

The KO4'd 2.7 is actually one of the most fuel efficient engines I've ever seen as measured against BHP generation.

I average about 220 miles to a tank.
About 26mpg on the motorway and 15 around town I usually average 21.
I have just come back from a round trip to Scotland for the week. 1863 miles and the DIS showed 29.0mpg by god I must have been driving like Phil's granny

My S4 has a standard engine. For commuting I get 290 miles per tank. On a long run at reasonable speeds I get about 350-370. I'd say to average 18mpg you are either

a) Pushing it along quite hard
b) Driving in heavy traffic a lot
c) There is something wrong.

Personally I'd get it checked over by a dealer in case something is amiss.

Just been through all my petrol receipts and the DIS is suprisingly accurate:
DIS shows 29.0mpg
Actual was 29.0088mpg
I thought it would be further out than that

It's only surprising because we have been led to believe otherwise by a series of cynical comments.

However considering that Audi have all the sensors in place and an on board computer, I think we'd all be justified in being upset if it wasn't accurate!

I've got a standard S4 avant that I've been running for 2 years. I usually get about 300miles on a tank, and average 24-25mpg - resetting the DIS each time. Im lucky enough to be able to walk to work, so the car gets used on decent trips and i hate sitting in traffic in it! (just frustration i suppose!) .. i did get 30+ once on a trip to scotland, just sat there with the cruise on...

S4's promised away .. looking for my next fun!
