RS2 - top speed (without limiter)

Post by simon44 » Tue May 06, 2008 1:41 pm

Hi there,

All the press articles say that the RS2 has a limited top speed of 163mph in standard trim. Has anyone heard of what the top speed is when the limiter is taken off? (where legally permitted).

There isn't a limiter to the rev range on mine either. Has it been removed perhaps? And is the top speed limiter easy to remove?

The cancellation of the rs246Live! event leaves me wondering these things!

The RS2 has a rev limiter, at either 6900 or 7300 RPM depending on the year. If the top speed limiter is taken off, they can do close to 175 mph real speed.

That's great, many thanks. So I guess on the clock it must register at well over 180mph taking into account the usual 10%. I've only driven mine a couple of times since I bought it (its in the workshop for the usual brakes etc and hopefully due out this week). It pulls really well to well past 7500rpm so the limiter must have been taken off.

Thanks for your help. Now I know what to say when asked!!

Watch so you don't bend your exhaust valves if the revs really go past 7500, but I really doubt it, on a standard car, you get valve float well before those RPMs.

Hi, thanks for that, I will do. I didnt know there was a limiter until I read about it. At the time, although I cant say exactly, I changed gear at about 7750rpm as there was no more acceleration to be had, but the engine was as smooth as cream, in fact the higher the revs, the smoother and racier it felt.

Is there any prior warning before valve bending or do they go suddenly?

Hey Simon,

With all that grunt on tap, why do you feel the need to pull those sort of revs? Slam it in the next gear and let it work. That's what it does best. If you're changing up anywhere near 7,000 the turbo will be ready and waiting for you in the next gear.

I've only had one engine give up on me spectacularly (not an Audi, admittedly) and I can tell you that at the time it's embarrassing and almost immediately afterwards it's expensive.

Thanks for your posts DickyC and Venetors2. My post is trying to find out more information on speed and rev limiters rather than torque and BHP curves and peaks which are well documented. S2tuner has come back with some really good information - now I'll be able to sleep easy!

I had a v.max GPS confirmed run on my chipped RS2 of 167mph. That was on a car with in excess of 130,000 miles on it and 2 up.

The car held that speed easily and felt comfortable doing so.

When you're chasing those very high speeds you come up against the physical law of drag increasing as the square of the speed.

If you have 10 units of drag at 10 units of speed, you have 100 units of drag at 20 units of speed. You can't escape it. And at maximum speed every tiny increase in speed is costing huge amounts of power to overcome the drag.

Anyone remember trying to modify the original Mini to do over a ton?

Ah, yes. The mods we used to do were a little less ambitious...
