Manifold heatshield rattle

Post by toasty » Mon Sep 29, 2003 12:46 pm

Chaps,

Had the S4 in the dealers to sort out some niggly problems with the armrest, suspension etc...

I also reported that the exhaust seemed quite loud with the windows opened, I was hearing a slight metallic rattling noise.

They reckon that the manifold heatshields have started to separate from the manifolds and that's causing the noise.

Apparently not covered by the Audi extended warranty and not covered by any recalls either?

I thought this was a recall? Does anyone know for sure? (mine is a '98 S reg S4 saloon)

I don't want to have to pay the £2500 that the dealer quotes for the work

There was a recal, but to which part it actually referred to I am unsure

I had the same problem on my S4 and they did it as a recall.

£2500 is obscene for the work isnt it! You must try QST or AmD to get an alternative price to beat them down

ALternatively speak to customer services and see if they can be any assistance

Pain isn't it, good luck
Can't beat a bit of boost!

I had this done on my S4 at AmD. As I recall it cost £12 for the part and about £300 for labour.

Thanks Bushy and Rob.

Before I write to Audi (see if I can get it done for free) does anyone know for sure if it is an actual recall?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a recall. There's no safety issue; it's just annoying. I think there might have been a recall on some early cars for a different manifold issue though.

Hi, If you havnt already sorted out your heat shield rattle call AMD. I think you will find two options, (A) AMD will be cheaper (B) you cna probably just get away with leaving the shields, what is a rattle comparrison to 2.5k.

According to Audi UK this was a problem on early models. Had AMD and several Audi dealers look at my S4 when I had the problem and (they agreed for once!) the manifolds had to be changed due to a heatshield rattle (which just keeps getting worse). This is an engine out job, hence the £2500 or so price tag - I decided to have the turbos done too at the same time.
Apparently, Audi recommended owners should have this done under warranty in the late Nineties, however it was not a recall...

I was under the impression that the heatshield rattle lead to extra heat b#ggering the turbo's (or at least shortening their life).. I stand to be corrected though..

That may well be, but I was never able to get a "consistent" story from Audi on that one....although one Dealer said if I didnt change the turbos at the same time, the problem would reoccur...could have been a sales pitch though

£9000 ? You are kidding ?
For that money you could have the full K04 job, get at least £2k change, and I suspect whoever did it with fix the stupid shield for free.
If he really has been quoted £9000, then someone is seriously taking the

I think it's a bit more than the heat shield now
i put a test on both his turbo's and 1 is not giving any boost
Apparently the heatshield probs has fecked his turbo so ive been told.
has this happened to anyone else?
the car is also sluggish and slow

bass,

it seems possible that the problem can kill the turbos. However even replacing a pair of K03s and the manifolds should not cost anywhere near £9K. As has been said, for that money he should get a 400bhp car.
